The Short Box Podcast #389 - How To Manage Your Comic Pull List and Other Wisdom From Walt

[00:00:00] Intro music plays

[00:00:23] Drew: You got some kebab on your shirt,

[00:00:25] Badr: bro. Them kebabs was so good

[00:00:27] Walt: Yeah man, that thing put me in a trance. Yeah, I know. I got the, I itis. I'm like, yeah, we about to do this shit. We, I gotta move my energy up a little bit. That's what I'm saying. But I was gonna happen. I'm about to really ease into NPR dub right now.

[00:00:42] Walt: I

[00:00:42] Badr: know. We got, um, yeah, we got the, we're dealing with the itis, but I need high energy boys. High energy

[00:00:46] Drew: All right. Here's before we get started, Walt you need a water? or a drink?

[00:00:49] Walt: or a drink? I got a water right here. I know better.

[00:00:51] Badr: It's the, it's a water hour and then night cap. Huh? I said it's the water hour for me and then

[00:00:57] Walt: it's gonna be a night cap.

[00:00:58] Walt: Yeah, I'm gonna do it. I got, I left the drink I had outside, outside, so I'll go back and finish it up. That

[00:01:02] Drew: cool? So Andrew's the only one that's not gonna drink as well.

[00:01:05] Walt: You can drink. Hey, you can drink shit.

[00:01:07] Drew: Ain't nobody tell you not to. I'm afraid that I'm gonna get to a level where I'm just like, incoherent.

[00:01:11] Walt: No, you not, are you right? We got like a, we going run join ball, like we gonna run this joint about like an hour. So, Unless you, um, go wild and Yeah, I'm about to say unless you've been out here wilding while, nah, I'm good. I'm bad. Did you do some shit I wasn't paying attention to? Nah. Okay, then you be all, then you be alright.

[00:01:27] Drew: Oh, this drink was kind of strong. You missed the part where I gave him a sip.

[00:01:30] Walt: You may wanna go grab a coaster though. That way the thing's gonna get wet. He's worried because his drink is

[00:01:35] Badr: strong as fuck.

[00:01:37] Walt: That's okay. Yo, look in the, um, look in there and then you should look to your left. You should see a, a thing of coasters.

[00:01:45] Walt: It's by the stack

[00:01:46] Badr: of Playboys and iconic

[00:01:48] Walt: books. Yeah, there you go. You, you didn't have to bring all the coasters, you just get the one coast. No, I appreciate it. Nah, he was looking out for me. Okay. I don't need a coast. Yeah, you're good to go.

[00:01:58] Badr: Whoa. We've been recording in this kitchen for 10 years. Yeah, I, yeah,

[00:02:02] Walt: we, that is fucking

[00:02:04] Badr: crazy.

[00:02:05] Walt: It's amazing. We realized that today. This is really good. I like it. Yo, the time just be plying on you. It does it

[00:02:10] Badr: not. I'm curious to see if I can find, our first episode we recorded out of this house is,

[00:02:16] Walt: yeah,

[00:02:16] Badr: it'd be. It'd be 10 years ago. I mean,

[00:02:19] Walt: it'd be 2013 at some point, like toward the end of 2013.

[00:02:23] Walt: Whatever we record at the end of 2013.

[00:02:25] Badr: Well, you think of 2013, what comes to mind in the world of comics or like pop culture? Oh my God. Um, are you, I guess, are you that good at like recalling pop culture where you can go at at it by from years? What? Cause I can, I do in 20

[00:02:38] Drew: recommender on KX force.

[00:02:40] Badr: Oh, that's a good one.

[00:02:41] Badr: Let me see if the result

[00:02:42] Drew: or Uncanny Avengers. That's a good

[00:02:43] Walt: guess. What was that? Uh, he was on Uncanny Avengers that,

[00:02:46] Drew: yeah, so Uncanny

[00:02:47] Walt: Avengers. Uncanny Avengers was popping. Um, the Thor, it was still early in that, um, Jason Aaron's th run. We would've also had, at that point I was still reading a bunch of image books, so I feel like Southern bastards probably would've been going on around that time.

[00:03:02] Drew: So you think it's like black science?

[00:03:04] Walt: Saga, saga, black science.

[00:03:07] Badr: Oh, Drew's not too far off. Uncanny vendors was 2012, according to this. Yeah, so probably

[00:03:12] Walt: 2013, it would've only been a few issues.

[00:03:14] Drew: And I distinctly remember because we talk X-Men, so now I deal with Walton X-Men periods.

[00:03:21] Badr: That's a good point. It's like, all right, who's writing X-Men?

[00:03:23] Badr: Yeah. So right now,

[00:03:24] Drew: who's writing the X-Men at this point? Um, Duggan. Yeah. So Duggan, and now we have Hickman.

[00:03:30] Walt: I'm really curious about this, uh, this random Hickman book. Like, obviously the Ultimate Hickman book, but there's another one that, that he says was the,

[00:03:38] Badr: it's gonna be the, um, Sandman of the Marvel universe.

[00:03:42] Walt: That was the actual other book that he was like, he said he wrote two bibles and that was the second Bible with Cete. What?

[00:03:49] Badr: Machete, that's his name, right? I guess. Yeah.

[00:03:52] Drew: Yeah. That was like his, his frequent collaborator.

[00:03:55] Badr: We've been talking a lot about Grails these last couple episodes and like, you know those, those comic books that if you won the lottery you would go get Yeah.

[00:04:02] Badr: And I've heard some pretty good ones, but I think mine, I keep changing mine cause I'm like, nah, that that'd be the one. And right now what I'm thinking of is you mentioned, uh, Hickman writing a Bible for this upcoming Marvel series. Well, they got me thinking about like when Milestone was created, they made like this big, they call it, I've seen the Milestone Bible.

[00:04:23] Badr: Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I can't, I mean, I've never seen it. Listen on eBay, I've never seen photos of it, but I mean, in the documentaries they've just, they still

[00:04:31] Walt: have it

[00:04:31] Badr: though. I would love to see that though. Yeah. Like the initial drawing for like static

[00:04:35] Walt: chalk and all that. I can't, like, I can't, that's a piece of history, bro.

[00:04:39] Walt: I would assume one of the Huddling Brothers habits or shit like

[00:04:42] Badr: that, like Reginald Huddling, Dennis Cohen probably,

[00:04:44] Walt: yeah. Um, one of them guys got it. Yeah, because they showed it in that documentary.

[00:04:49] Badr: That would be so cool to own that. I feel like Amazing Spider-Man One. Yeah. It's like, yeah, that's a, a fucking low hanging fruit, but something like, like that where you've never seen that before, like the fucking milestone Bible that was used to launch this universe.

[00:05:03] Badr: It's like that is a piece of history. That is a grail to me. That's a good answer. Thank you. Thank you. Have y'all ever thought about like what y'all would like? You won the lotto. A million dollar Lado. You have money to splurge.

[00:05:14] Walt: You already done a million dollar shit. All. Let's say we won a mega Millions, $500 million mega.

[00:05:19] Walt: Millions. All right, I like it. 500

[00:05:21] Badr: million. Go ahead. Million. 500 million, right? You know. You've got the money to buy whatever that fucking nerdy be,

[00:05:29] Drew: one thing. Or can it be like several high, I'm, I

[00:05:31] Badr: wanna hear some high parts. Are we talking comics

[00:05:33] Walt: or are we talking Yeah. You're like, you're like,

[00:05:34] Badr: okay, so this is only comic.

[00:05:35] Badr: I take care of everything else. Now I'm gonna splurge specifically on comic books. Okay. What do you buy? I was about to say, because now price is no longer, uh, you know, it's, it's not a big

thing

[00:05:44] Walt: comic book wise. I. Guess I'm going to grab as many of those important Spider-Man books as possible. Same. Such as what,

[00:05:52] Badr: what I, I

[00:05:52] Walt: wanna hear specifics.

[00:05:53] Walt: I mean, shit, I would probably grab the first about a hundred issues of Spider-Man. Okay. Oh, okay. And it's, and I'll do the same thing with, um, fantastic Four. Okay, so you're going bulk. You're going bulk. Cause if you get those first hundred issues of those two books Mm, then you have basically the majority of everything that kind of matters in

[00:06:11] Badr: Marvel.

[00:06:11] Badr: Yeah. The first appearances of so many. Yeah. Just some fantastic photo alone is crazy. That's what I'm saying.

[00:06:16] Walt: So yeah, that's good. Okay. You just do those two. But to, to deviate from this a little bit. With that type of money. You know what, I, I would just buy the Honda Wagner baseball card. That's what I would do.

[00:06:28] Walt: What, what baseball card is it? Hos Wagner. Okay. There is a hos Wagner card that every so often, like you can look it up. Ha, Wagner. Um, baseball card. The baseball card that always sells for the most money. It'll come up from auction every about like 10 years, give or take. Really? Yeah. So I think the last time that bitch sold for like, oh my God, like.

[00:06:52] Walt: Sofer.

[00:06:52] Badr: Alright. I see one right here from August, uh, 2022 on ESPN Rare T oh six Ho Wagner baseball card. Sold for 7.25 million in private sale record. Okay. Private. Here we go. Yeah, like a comic

[00:07:07] Walt: book. Yeah, because they used to draw on that. That's the most infamous one. That's the one that's most, that's the card.

[00:07:11] Walt: I would, that's what I would, that's what I would do. Damn. Like, yeah. All right. Cool, cool, cool. Yeah, that's what I would do with, I would get, let me get me a haunted Wagner. Or a Mickey Mantle or a Hank Aaron rookie card, one of those two. Those are some

[00:07:27] Badr: solid answers. Yeah. Well, and there we go.

[00:07:30] Walt: Drew, what about you?

[00:07:30] Badr: All right. I would like

[00:07:31] Drew: to do the same thing he did, but what I'm gonna be getting is a lot of like the big title Spider-Man. Mm-hmm. Well, I like what he said, the first 60, like honestly the, yeah, the first 60. That's good one. Yeah. 60

[00:07:45] Walt: to a hundred is fine. Whichever, yeah.

[00:07:48] Drew: I would get the John Burn, like famous covers of the black and white costume Spider-Man.

[00:07:53] Drew: Like all those John Burn covers. Yeah. Um, all the top McFarland

[00:07:57] Badr: covers. So there, so there isn't like one that you sp like Oh, oh, like a one specific? Yeah. I wanna hear like one specifically.

[00:08:04] Drew: Oh. Um, probably like the first appearance of Venom.

[00:08:08] Walt: Okay. So I will answer this question for, I'll, I'll go back and re-answer this real quick.

[00:08:13] Walt: For me, it's going to either be Black Panther. The first appearance of Black Panther or the first appearance of the Silver Surfer and Galactus. Damn. That'd be tight. And those would just be two

[00:08:23] Badr: fantastic four books basically. And any particular reason why, why you gravitate towards those two?

[00:08:27] Walt: The Black Panther part is a little bit later in the run, like issue what, like 30 or 40 or something like that.

[00:08:33] Walt: Mm-hmm. But that, um, Galata shit is pretty early

[00:08:36] Badr: in. Well is uh, I'm asking is there any sentimental reason for picking the Galata Silver Surfer? Nah.

[00:08:41] Walt: Galata is just a dope ass character. He is. Those are just dope characters. He

[00:08:45] Badr: is, yeah. Uh,

[00:08:46] Drew: now I would like to add the first appearance of Miles. Morales. Okay.

[00:08:52] Walt: I'm shocked you Don actually don't have that.

[00:08:54] Badr: We've definitely had

[00:08:55] Drew: that. I've add that and I've owned that and it's just been like,

[00:08:58] Badr: just like that. A few probably too.

[00:09:00] Walt: Did you just sell it a bunch of times? Yeah, probably

[00:09:02] Badr: me and Drew talk all the time about how. Even though like we were in that moment of Miles, Morales, and knowing like, damn, this is kind of, this is a big deal.

[00:09:11] Badr: This is sticking like this, you know, no excuse the pun. Like this is sticking to the wall. Yeah. Uhhuh like they threw something at the wall and this one is sticking like, which it's the most

[00:09:19] Walt: important thing, Brian. I go, EZ did in color. Whoa. And

[00:09:21] Drew: it's like peak, peak business word. Like, all right, this makes sense.

[00:09:25] Drew: And it's a defining era for comic books. I

[00:09:27] Badr: can't help think about Miles Morales, spider-Man and not think about Willie Evans. Because that is when I like met Willie Evans. He came in, he was shooting a rap video. This is when I was still cutting my widows. He, oh my god. So you know, that's like fucking, you know, teen bought or some shit, not name about it.

[00:09:46] Badr: And he was like recording the music video and they were on like setting up shot. And he was like, I think in his pole he had a pull. In his poll was that Miles Morales. And I was talking to him about it. He was like, dude, does this not feel like a moment? We were both like, yo, this is like important, right?

[00:10:00] Badr: And he's like, yeah, this shit feels like

[00:10:01] Walt: a moment. And little did people know that it was a moment. But cuz you've told me the other thing that I would actually do if I had like a time capsule or whatever, I would just go back and make sure if I did nothing else, I would buy every image number one. Point blank period.

[00:10:22] Walt: Yeah.

[00:10:22] Badr: Why? You can pretty much find those pretty easy.

[00:10:25] Walt: Not first France. The way he explained that Walker dead shit to me just would never not be funny. Do you remember this trip? Oh

[00:10:31] Drew: yeah. The Walking Dead where I sold it, it got damaged. I, I got it back, the refund and the insurance pay for it, and then I sold it again for more money.

[00:10:40] Badr: We called him Triple Threat. Triple Threat Group for

[00:10:43] Walt: a minute. God. So what I'm really saying is this. All right. There's enough of those image books that do, um, like everything ain't going get you a gang of bread, and you shouldn't really be in the comic books as you try to build a, um, preach college tuition.

[00:10:57] Walt: Yeah, you, I might as well

[00:10:58] Badr: just stick to

[00:10:58] Walt: stocks and I literally higher raise. I literally only buy comic books to read them. And if there's, if there's a book that's worth something in my room, I wouldn't even know it. Yeah, because I've never looked at, I haven't seen a wizard or whatever the equivalent of Wizard is now.

[00:11:12] Walt: Well, I

[00:11:12] Badr: think the equivalent now is like your overstreets. Now there's like websites dedicated to tracking sales. I

[00:11:17] Walt: ain't looked at no shit like that in 30 years because I don't care.

[00:11:21] Badr: That's what I said last episode. Um, when we did the, uh, interview with Ryan, uh, short box picture, shout us to Ryan. Here's a great interview.

[00:11:28] Badr: I think when I sold all my single issues, that moment was for me like. I'm not gonna ever be collecting that serious again. That was a moment and a time capsule and like, you know, I kind of just like had my moment with it. Now, I mean, drew knows I give away a lot of my single issues. I might go on whatnot and sell 'em for a little bit, but for the most part, I've done like giveaways of short boxes full of comics now.

[00:11:52] Badr: Yeah. Because to your point, it's like I incorporating, incorporating economy into my comic books. Yo, it's already expensive enough, right? I don't want to think more math real

[00:12:01] Walt: quick before we go any further. Yeah, yeah. Shout of a man, Nick Wagner. Oh. If you know, you know, and I know he know. And I know that, you know, so I appreciate you brother.

[00:12:11] Walt: You said that

[00:12:12] Badr: so cool. I don't even wanna ruin it by being like, no, we gotta give Nick Wagner his props. Nope.

[00:12:16] Walt: We'll just keep it pushing. But I gave his props real fast cause that's my mans and them. He know the vibes. I know the vibes. I appreciate you, brother.

[00:12:24] Badr: One of the topics I want your opinion on.

[00:12:25] Badr: Lately I have been enjoying, um, like dedicating an hour a day to going outside, being outside and reading. You know, I got the balcony. By the time I log outta work, it's around like five-ish. The sun is like, you know, it's working its way down. It's not even bad. Yeah. So it's,

[00:12:40] Walt: yeah. You

[00:12:41] Badr: missed the bad song.

[00:12:42] Badr: Exactly. And I'm in the shade. Yeah. So I mean, and I got like this low chair, like it's like this little blue camping chair that sits low and I like to sit in low and I've been enjoying like five, I'll say five 30. Five 30 to six 30. I'm outside. Same thing. I'll put the phone, I'll leave the phone inside and I'll just read.

[00:13:00] Badr: And I got through the Malcolm X book. And I was kind of like, okay, let me re some. Was that your first time reading that

[00:13:05] Walt: book? It was. That is a

[00:13:07] Badr: fantastic book. Oh, it was. It's, it is a life changing book. It's literally one of like the 10 best books I've been read. I finished reading and I was like, wow. I, this is definitely one of those books you don't walk away from and not like, you know, have a different, anyway, it's a little bit, yeah.

[00:13:18] Badr: So amazing book. Right. But now I'm like, okay. I want to take a break from reading book books cuz that was a lot. Let me like, just kind of sit with it. It, it ain't light. Yeah. So now I've been catching up cuz now I'm like, okay, well this is a perfect time to catch up on like my comic books. So I've been like knocking out three to four single issues like a day during like this little reading hour and lately.

[00:13:39] Badr: That to me has been my ideal like reading experience. So I wanna hear from you guys like. What is your ideal this like reading situation when it comes to like, okay, I'm gonna catch up on comic books. Do you gotta do it outside? There's gotta be a certain time of day.

[00:13:54] Walt: Okay. For me, before my shop, What's Unc Sironi, um, bought out to build a Buffalo Wild Wings, wherever the hell they go.

[00:14:05] Badr: Every comic, not Buffalo Wild Wings, not just vacation.

[00:14:09] Walt: So basically what I would do, I would go to the shop, let's say I would go on Tuesday. Cause most shops really get their, I mean, dirty secret. They get their books on like no later than Tuesday. They already been there. Sometimes they got it on Monday anyway.

[00:14:25] Walt: I would go up there, get all my books, come back, lay on the couch, look at the stack, and just start going book by book by book. And I'll just read. Do you ever place him in any order? Yeah, the only thing I always do is I read the X-Men books first.

[00:14:41] Badr: Okay, so you clearly his favorites.

[00:14:43] Walt: Yeah. I read the X-Men book first and then anything that's not a X-Men book.

[00:14:48] Walt: I read in that's, those are the back of the pile.

[00:14:51] Drew: Do you immediately read after book, after book or do you go to Twitter to see what people are talking about? No,

[00:14:56] Walt: I just read the books. If I look, if I'm you in that moment, all right. Yeah. I don't look, I don't need to get Twitter. If I'm reading a book early, I don't give a fuck what the people thing.

[00:15:06] Badr: All right, so what, you're a straight go pick 'em up, try to read 'em instantly.

[00:15:11] Walt: I try. I try as much as possible. But you know, I'm like, I'm human like everybody else. So. Well yours is

[00:15:18] Badr: very practical. It's not romanticized at all. It's like Rich, I'm gonna read these books I

[00:15:22] Walt: bought. Yeah, I'll read the books I bought.

[00:15:23] Walt: That's right. So right now I still got six books left from the last time I, my guy sent me, cuz now they mailed me the books. So I haven't read the New Saga. I haven't read The End of Ridley's Black Panther Run. Which thank God cuz he sucks on this Black Panther book. I got, um, couple other books in there too, but those are the two I just know off the Oh, Philadelphia.

[00:15:47] Walt: Which I don't know why I thought it was going to end, but it just keeps going. Is the gift to get keeps on giving? Yeah, it's not, cause it's a really cool book, but I was just like, I don't know why I thought this book was going end a little bit quicker than it has. Cause now we're gonna issue like 30.

[00:16:00] Walt: Yeah. So I'm just gonna let that bitch ride until it's done. But I, I sit back and I'll read, I'll turn on the air and I'll read, and then I'll read, let's say like, get a stack of like, I don't know, let's say I got a stack about 15 books. I'll read about seven or eight of 'em. Okay. Okay. And then take a break.

[00:16:18] Walt: So that's good.

[00:16:18] Badr: That's, that's a solid day. Yeah. Drew, what about you, man? What's the, what's the ideal? Like, I'm just gonna read comic books type

[00:16:23] Drew: of day that I work nighttime. So when I get off of work, I go straight to sleep. And then when I wake up, usually around 10 o'clock, it's like home alone. He is like, yo, hello.

[00:16:34] Drew: Anybody here like Rob's at work, got the house to myself, make myself a coffee. And then I just basically pick the comic books, take 'em out of bags, and then us like arrange them as sorts, like, what did I miss and what do I need to catch up on?

[00:16:50] Badr: I usually try to tackle like the first issues at the way first.

[00:16:53] Badr: I'm like, I need to know if I like this book so I can make this decision

[00:16:56] Walt: immediately. I don't know if I like a book until after the first I read the

[00:17:00] Badr: first arc. No, that's, that's fair. But lately it's been like, I've been really cutthroat, like, because I'm picking up a lot of first issues, so I'm like, all right.

[00:17:09] Badr: Which one's like got my attention enough for me to at least like forget about cutting it from the pool. Okay. Um, so I usually try to tackle first issues first, just to like get those out the way cuz they're short too. And then, I'll try to catch up on anything. I'm two issues and behind cause I like to read those like back to back to back.

[00:17:27] Badr: You like to binge read? I do. Cause for me it always feels like I'm playing catch when I like get to enjoy comic a hundred percent man. I can't wait until the one day artist. It'll always be playing catch up. I'm

[00:17:38] Drew: like three issues behind Miles Morales.

[00:17:40] Badr: And it's like, yo, I want to be current with a book.

[00:17:42] Badr: It'd be nice to be like that current with a

[00:17:45] Walt: book. It took me a while to catch up on f I had collected this. Oh, you saw the fables? Yeah. And I had let that thing go to like, I about like four inch, four or five issues back. So I was like, you know what, let just sit back and read all of these now. So

[00:18:00] Badr: I, I brought this topic up because it's just been nice.

[00:18:03] Badr: I've been looking forward to like reading to sound corn of your shit. It's like, oh, the fact I'm making it like, you know, I'm making a date, like I'm making it an occasion. Right. Like trying to read it at sunset after work that you treat me yourself, man. Exactly.

[00:18:16] Drew: I make my best little bit of read a book rather than it makes me feel better.

[00:18:20] Drew: Like, I'm like, ooh, I'm reading a book tonight in bed. Let me make this up for you real nice. I got

[00:18:24] Walt: that. I feel that Bob, I feel that I'm talking

[00:18:27] Drew: Wash less sheets, like make the

[00:18:29] Badr: bed. I guess I brought this up because I think about how we always talk about like getting just left behind or like, you know, just falling behind and like getting a stack of books.

[00:18:39] Badr: You start questioning why do I even own this? Why? Like, I should take a break, but I think $5. But I think making a conscious effort of having it like, you know, a ritual. Definitely helps Sal. It makes it, that's part

[00:18:50] Walt: of it. But we gonna go to, like, something that you, uh, also brought up is that, that Amber vibe, I, I follow her rule on this thing.

[00:18:58] Walt: Remind us again, what's the Amber rule? If it's the last book you read, every time you buy the book, you'll need the book.

[00:19:04] Badr: But wouldn't that also mean it's always gonna be a constant damn? It's always a constant fucking, you're always making a trim. That's some point. The next

[00:19:11] Walt: book's gonna be the last book.

[00:19:12] Walt: Yeah. But if it's the last book you read, you don't enjoy it. Ah, okay. Because look, it's not like, Like sometimes it can just be the last book you write. Got it, got it, got it. Yeah. But then sometimes like, I'm reading this last because I'm only reading this because I'll follow, I'd rather read all this

[00:19:26] Badr: other stuff first.

[00:19:27] Walt: Yes. Got it. And you know the feeling between the reading this other stuff first and just the last book and a

[00:19:32] Badr: sac. That's fair. Okay. Which, uh, gets a little ahead, but yeah, I guess the natural progression to the next topic is when do you know it's time to cut a book from your poll list? Well, you just said that you follow the, the Amber Rule.

[00:19:45] Badr: Drew, when does a book get. Put on the chopping

[00:19:49] Drew: block for when it goes from 3 99 to 4 99. Hell, when it went from 2 99 to 3 99, we're gonna be real. Oh

[00:19:56] Badr: man. Still upset about that?

[00:19:58] Drew: Hell yeah. DC made such a campaign. We draw the line. All right, cool. I can get behind this for a

[00:20:03] Badr: little bit. Well, they, well, they didn't tell you what the pencil line Damn you through.

[00:20:07] Badr: Yeah, my bad side got a eraser on it. We're, we're moving the line, but we won't draw. Yeah.

[00:20:15] Walt: After hearing, then like you say. Yeah. Cause like I'm gonna be a lot more depending on like with X-Men books, for the most part. Outside of like Wolverine. Wolverine, I just don't read Wolverine books. But everyone else, I'm willing to give them kind of like a chance.

[00:20:32] Walt: Yeah. But if the, like we can use New Mutants as an example. Right now, if this guy is gonna be the main person on New Mutants from. Here on out, I'm gonna need him to do a little bit better because the only reason I'm reading New Mutants because it ties into Cola, not because I think it's a entertaining book for like the last, since Vita, um, ALA, or whatever her name was since she left, it hasn't really been entertaining to me, and that book was super

[00:21:03] Badr: good.

[00:21:04] Badr: So, uh, cause Well, I feel like you're very lenient. Like you give a lot of books, like more time than i, I probably ever would. So like, what is the break? What, what's like the breaking point? Like what is the straw that breaks the camel's back where you're just like, fuck it, it's getting

[00:21:17] Walt: canceled. Oh, the, the writing is just boring.

[00:21:20] Walt: Okay. Like, I'm, I'm a writer person more than anything unless Greg land is drawn it and that is a

[00:21:27] Badr: bro instant cut.

[00:21:27] Walt: That's an instant like, Nah, I ain't gonna be Rock Hook. This book, that guy

[00:21:31] Badr: draws that guy and his thing Greg Land can sneak up on any, any title.

[00:21:35] Walt: Greg Landon, who's, yeah, Greg Land is a, yeah, Greg.

[00:21:38] Walt: Greg Land

[00:21:38] Badr: will show up at like issue seven special guest. Matter of fact, you know when it's like Mo, when it's a Amber alert for Greg land possibility is when a arc ends, because that's when he just finds his way in. It's like, oh, this arc of Avengers ended guess was on issue seven and eight Greg land.

[00:21:53] Badr: It's like, Ooh,

[00:21:54] Walt: I gotta read this. Yeah, cause we can use the Avenger, like we can use the Avengers book that's ending now. Like the um, yeah, the Jason Aaron, the Jason Aaron book. Jason Aaron's Avengers was just, and I gave that on a super long run. And then it was just one day I said, bro, I don't like this book.

[00:22:15] Walt: And I just was like, yeah, I'm not gonna buy any more of these. And that was it. And it's more than that. I don't think Jason, Aaron's a good writer. Think he's a bad Avenger

[00:22:25] Badr: writer. When I feel like a book is just meandering or I don't know what the next, that's what that like

[00:22:31] Walt: what where we're going to, that's that board, that's what it did.

[00:22:32] Walt: Right. That's a really good, that's a really good observation. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:22:35] Badr: It's like, okay, I've been reading this for three issues and if I was to regurgitate what the plot is, I'd probably be like, ah, they're doing this. But not, that's when I think I, I'm ready for a book to be cut, because at that point it's like, I'm already 12 bucks in and I don't feel like I'm getting a return on

[00:22:51] Walt: investment.

[00:22:51] Walt: Ridley's Black Panther was like that too. And I was giving, really, I gave Ridley a strong little run because more than anything else, he had wrote those DC books like right before that. So those history of dc you know, those, um, those big, yeah. History. All those are good. Yeah. That his black parenting was so bad.

[00:23:10] Walt: Ugh.

[00:23:13] Badr: Drew, how likely are you to stay on a book? That has changed out the original or principle creators. So like, let's say it's a like a Ed ru baker, Sean Phillips, and then they decide to like swatch switch the creative team after they've already established them two. How long do you stay on. Do you immediately leave?

[00:23:33] Badr: Oh no. I try to give you two to

[00:23:34] Walt: Greg L. Greg

[00:23:35] Badr: Land changed to Greg Landberg. Greg, Greg, but no, no. Like this is a different creative team. Two issues, two issues.

[00:23:42] Drew: I give it two issues you guys give it. I was like, damn, you guys give it way more like three or four. Like I go two issues. If it's not, cuz two issues, just like act one and you better have like, oh, okay, this is how you do it.

[00:23:52] Drew: If it doesn't happen by then I'm like, nah, I'm good.

[00:23:54] Badr: I gotta add on to this question. Oh, I'm gonna flip this one on the said. Can you recall a title that you got rid of your pull? And immediately had kind of like regret cuz it just started ramping up and you had to do the walk of shame back. Like, hey, go ahead and put it back on my phone.

[00:24:08] Drew: Hey Jonathan, can you put me back? Yeah, I know I said

[00:24:12] Badr: it because this is after Jonathan's at like, been asking you, have you, did you see what happened in last shoot? And you had to be like, nah, just a real

[00:24:18] Walt: good que I've never, I don't think I've done

[00:24:21] Badr: that. Your iPod bro. iPod you out

[00:24:23] Walt: here. Podcasting. For real?

[00:24:25] Walt: This boy, cooking

[00:24:27] Badr: man.

[00:24:28] Drew: That's what he does. Look at

[00:24:29] Badr: the way he's having his mic. Thank you. Thank you for letting me, uh, letting me cook. Appreciate that. All right. I think, let me try to think, I can't

[00:24:37] Walt: think of a book I've done at all. I think

[00:24:39] Badr: I got rid of, um, Dawn of Dark. What was the DC one? That one, the one that just happened before?

[00:24:44] Badr: Um, DC Dark Ages. Dark Ages. Was it? No,

[00:24:47] Drew: that's a Marvel one. That's a

[00:24:49] Walt: Marvel one. You talking about the Ec Knight? The one where's like The Game of Thrones? The Tom Taylor

[00:24:54] Badr: book? No, no, no, no. Uh, the one they just did was Sam Humphrey's. That launched d Donna DC It was like future, the last last big DC thing, whatever the last big DC uh, uh, event was.

[00:25:09] Badr: I read the fir or I had the first issue, but I knew I wasn't gonna collect it all cuz I was like, damn, these books are like 6 99, 7 99. It's also, I don't feel like reading this right now. DC Good for that. As soon, as soon as I got off. I think it was an only a five or six issue, limited series, whatever, like the big event was before like this dawn of DC relaunch.

[00:25:28] Badr: Every single time I came to the shop, Wal or Ben, I'm sorry, would be like. Dude, please tell me you're reading this. And I had it's flashpoint, it's not flashpoint, not flashpoint. It, it'll come to us. The flashpoint was, we will, yeah, yeah, yeah. It'll come to us. But I think one of these last DC events I cut, I, I got off it early, got it off my pool and then immediately started regretting it.

[00:25:48] Badr: Cuz I noticed like even comic Twitter was like, yo, this is actually pretty fucking good. Um, so that was one of my moments. Well, do

[00:25:55] Walt: you have a moment like that? Not really man. Cause if I look, I give books too much leeway. So if, if, If a book pick up, then I would just be there for the pickup. If I drop a book, I don't give a fuck if I drop a book.

[00:26:08] Walt: By that point. It don't matter what it pick up on. Cause like I was reading all those Star Wars books and they just kinda lost me at a certain point. I was like, you know what, I'm done with this. So

[00:26:16] Badr: you've never gone back and reread a book or, or re-added a

[00:26:20] Walt: book that you cut? Not re-add. I may go back and re-read it on one of the maps later on, but I ain't about to go.

[00:26:25] Walt: Once you cut, you could.

[00:26:27] Badr: Let me inject here. It was Dark crisis. Dark crisis. That's what the, uh, 50 that was. I've dark

[00:26:32] Drew: crisis. I really circle with Batman and Spider-Man. And actually, actually, actually I'll tell you right now, uh, chips Sarkis. Charitable facts. Okay. That, yeah. Chips or dexi, charitable. I got off way too soon.

[00:26:44] Drew: I don't, I think I got off at, like, I got off at at stop number seven,

[00:26:50] Badr: guys. Boom, boom. And then they

[00:26:52] Drew: left and I was like, oh my

[00:26:54] Badr: God. As soon as you left. It was balloons and like you heard partying. All right, we could begin the rave. Now,

[00:27:02] Drew: telly don't stop. You think you,

[00:27:09] Badr: bro, I didn't get off the first stop. I walked on the train and I, and I was like, oh, wrong train, and I just never got on the train. I missed the chips of Starsky Daredevil so

[00:27:20] Walt: bad. All look man, let me be clear God damn the way. I don't really mess with Chip ardian much cuz the way they just kind of bullshitted on how sex criminals came out.

[00:27:30] Walt: Like burnt me on anything I see his name on. I think he may be funny in general, but Sex criminals burnt you. Huh? He may be like a.

[00:27:40] Badr: Thank you for laughing at that terrible joke and, and thank you guys. My self

[00:27:44] Walt: esteem, I guess I'm really used to like image like. They didn't really announce how long they were gonna take a break for it. And they feel like that book was on break for like six months to a year.

[00:27:54] Badr: You are? That is well said.

[00:27:56] Badr: Image will just leave your ass in. The dust image is the girlfriend that just ghost you and then shows up seven months later like everything was gone. Look,

[00:28:03] Walt: the day I take southern bastards off my pole, be the day it comes back. Southern

[00:28:08] Badr: bastards is the prime example. Pri southern bastard. Come back and I won't ask any questions.

[00:28:12] Badr: I'll be like, baby, it's so good to have you back.

[00:28:14] Walt: And I'm still not sure about the, the two Hickman books that he had over there. Oh,

[00:28:20] Badr: um, Manhattan Project and Monday Murders.

[00:28:23] Walt: Yeah, the Monday murders book. I don't know. Did the Monday murder book end? I don't know. Well, That's what I'm saying. It's just Oh, my phone, the way

[00:28:30] Badr: you asked me that, you asked me that.

[00:28:31] Badr: Like a parent who's asking a cop, like, is my daughter gonna be okay? Is did you find her? Basically, I just had to break it. I don't know what, yeah,

[00:28:41] Walt: look, we did a prognosis. Yeah. It's not looking good. No, not even, it's not even like, it's not looking good. Yeah, the, um, analysis was inconclusive.

[00:28:52] Badr: Yeah, that's, it's not coming back to this big inconclusive vibes.

[00:28:56] Badr: All right. So, and what was the last topic I had in mind for us? You know, oh, this one was a little more sentimental. I was in Chamberlain's the other day. I. And anytime I'm in Chamberlain's I'm gonna go see if they got any of those essential books. Cuz they always have ones that I've never seen before.

[00:29:10] Badr: Like Essential Werewolf, my Night Essential, you know, rampaging Hulk, Raha Kid. Yeah. Like some shit. You're like wow. And Essential books to me, take me back to my childhood. It makes me think of like begging my dad to buy these books, which were like, at the time they felt, you know, they 25 bucks. Them things take me back.

[00:29:30] Badr: Just like reading like Eric Larson, amazing Spider-Man or Mark Bagley. It takes me back to like being a kid reading comic books and I wanted to know from you guys what, what is a comic book that brings you back to your youth? I guess it would be like your first comic book, right? But is there other books that like bring you back, drew?

[00:29:47] Drew: I have two books that bring me back to my earliest memory as a childhood and like consciousness of comic books. And I don't know if they're happening at the same time, but the one would be the age of apocalypse era. Like to me that was like super young and like learning all this stuff because like different people's brothers read it and they were explaining you.

[00:30:07] Drew: And then any of the Ben Riley, um, spider-Man covers where it's um, him wearing the. His new costume, not the Scarlet Spiderman hood, but the one where he's wearing the, what is it? Like the, the black piping and the blue sides? Yeah. Yeah, that one. So any of those specifically? Yeah, the, the, the one where you talk about the onslaught Sentinel one.

[00:30:30] Drew: Mm-hmm. Like that one right there for sure. Brings me back

[00:30:33] Badr: to my childhood. That was a good answer cuz now it is got me thinking. I guess, well, in your case, are there any characters or I guess like moments in comics that bring you back? Because you brought up Age of Apocalypse and For me, yes. It's like that brings me back.

[00:30:45] Walt: I mean for me it's, I'm like, I'm always have on X-Men, so like any X-Men books with like long shot at him, we've been honest long shots when I was like, huh, I ain't see this guy forever,

[00:30:57] Badr: like an old friend. Year to

[00:30:58] Drew: date. What's your favorite X-Men um, event? Like we're concluding Messai complex. I mean, honestly, I've been down all those

[00:31:06] Walt: Hox and Pox

[00:31:08] Badr: House of X Power X Man.

[00:31:09] Badr: Oh damn,

[00:31:10] Walt: that's it. Hox and Pox baby. Damn right. Once that kind of popped off, it was just like, huh, everything makes way more sense. And now my, my world is clearer.

[00:31:21] Badr: House of X Power OFX is really interesting filter. It was like a nice, because like of how quickly it just became, Like accepted in how popular it was or like, you know, like it's a new

[00:31:33] Walt: classic.

[00:31:34] Walt: You know, what it really boil down to is this, we had seen the proof, we had seen, what is it? Um, proof of concept with Hickman, with two other major books at this point. Okay. Okay. So we, we've championed how good that, um, Hickman Fantastic. Four Ad Naum on this particular podcast. Yeah. Guess what? Still good.

[00:31:58] Walt: Yo. The same thing with his Secret Wars, and the same thing with his adventure run. I like going back and rereading 'em. I've been rereading them. Yeah, they're good.

[00:32:06] Badr: He kind of writes like the definitive. Things of whatever property, especially like in Superhero Comic, or at least a Marvel, his Fantastic four is kind of like a definitive read, huh.

[00:32:16] Badr: You know, like you could just recommend

[00:32:18] Walt: that to someone and that'd be it. Every, every one of his runs on a Marvel book is low key. Damn to the best run of those books. His Avengers run is, to me, is easily as good as business. It's like, and he wasn't on that book as long, even remotely, as long as business.

[00:32:32] Walt: I

[00:32:32] Drew: would not be surprised if like we were to meet him again and then he pulls off his face and it's. It's his face, but you're like, oh shit, it's the Beyond a Hickman me the whole time. I'm like, God

[00:32:43] Walt: damn. That's why, like he, that's why for me, I used to feel that way about remainder and then like after reading them, enough of them kind of like mid, um, image books, I was just like, bro, there are no mid Hickman books.

[00:32:57] Walt: They're like, like there are no mid brew breaker books. Like every Ad Brew breaker book is good. Yeah.

[00:33:02] Badr: They got a certain quality

[00:33:03] Drew: in the state of like, um, a lot of the books looking back now that were too hard on that actually was a good idea. Do you guys ever go back and like, all right, maybe I was way too harsh now because of all the Zeb Wells Spider-Man stuff that's going on.

[00:33:16] Drew: Like, it's one of the things where people are like, man, Nick Spencer doesn't look so bad. Yo, in in comparison, people are like, oh,

[00:33:26] Walt: what is Zeb Wells doing on Spider? No,

[00:33:27] Badr: look, it's the same thing that happens with every Spider-Man art. Oh, everyone

[00:33:31] Walt: is losing their mind because they don't like something that happened.

[00:33:34] Badr: Everyone hates this current Zeb well, spider-Man run. So now it makes Nick Spencer, who is the previous writer's run, or the previous writers, what is the

[00:33:42] Walt: guy who was out here hanging out with, um, what wasn't his roommate for like Boomerang man or some shit. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. That's an expensive one. Zeb Wells wrote that Super Fire as Hell's book.

[00:33:53] Walt: Yes. Then I will trust him. That guy, I mean, but he don't have to juggle. I mean, what is he juggling? Juggling like five characters. I

[00:34:03] Drew: think also the artwork is lacking.

[00:34:05] Walt: Spider-Man should never have a shitty art artist

[00:34:08] Drew: because like John Ramon Jr. As much as I'm like, all right, man, listen, just give me really good talent.

[00:34:12] Drew: If John Ramon Jr. Drawn it,

[00:34:13] Walt: yeah, yep. Then it should be good. But nah.

[00:34:16] Drew: Oh really? Dude, it looks way too fluid. It looks so fluid now. It really,

[00:34:20] Walt: oh, it's hitter. It's hitter, right? It looks fluid. It's real like a,

[00:34:22] Drew: like, he used to be able, he used to be able to draw on like really good pops, but now everything looks like

[00:34:27] Walt: noodles.

[00:34:27] Walt: You know what happened? He spent too much time over there in dc. He ain't draw, he ain't drawn Spider-Man in years. And now he used, he used to draw a Superman.

[00:34:37] Badr: I mean, I'll, I'll admit it. I, I do think his stuff is hit or miss now. Even though he was one of my favorite fucking when he was on like kick ass and like doing that, that era, uh, jr.

[00:34:47] Badr: R j r, that dude is amazing. But then you've also gotta realize this dude's been drawing interiors, like doing the hard work, which is

[00:34:54] Walt: also, I'm shocked that he's still drawing. I'm actually shocked he's still drawing interiors. That's wild, man. Yo, I was going through, I was on, um, I was on the, the, the Marvel app and I was reading the Uncanny.

[00:35:09] Walt: Oh, the X Force book? The, um, the remainder X Force. Okay. Bro, I did not realize that Mark Brooks was out there drawing interiors.

[00:35:17] Badr: Oh. For like, oh wow. Mark Brooks is definitely a cover artist's name. Um, he did the

[00:35:21] Drew: iceman one. No, that was No, no. He

[00:35:22] Walt: drew some of UNC uncanny, um, or horse towards the tail, lm towards the tail, the remainder X Force book.

[00:35:28] Walt: So I'm reading. I was like, wait a minute, Mark Brooks. And then you start thinking like, yo, I've not seen this dude not draw. Right. Covers a cover in like 10

[00:35:37] Badr: years. Mark Brooks, his stuff to me is the murals. Mark Brooks. Yeah. Mark Brooks, right? Yes. Mark Brooks will draw like that dude is fired.

[00:35:46] Drew: He was poster, he was

drawing

[00:35:46] Badr: posters.

[00:35:47] Badr: The Xmen one immediately comes to mind. I think he did a Spider-Man one first 10 issues in the run. Yeah. And you're like, oh, that's what he's doing. This is why he's not doing interiors. Cuz it takes him 10 years to draw this giant fucking mural poster. Yeah, it

[00:35:59] Walt: is Copio drawing anything Anyway. Koel.

[00:36:02] Badr: Yes.

[00:36:03] Badr: Coppel.

[00:36:03] Drew: Yeah. He, he is

[00:36:04] Badr: with Mark Malar. Right.

[00:36:06] Drew: Magic order. Yeah, I think he's doing magic order, but he's also doing I

[00:36:10] Walt: Batman as well. Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That would make more sense cuz he did, he did not do the second magic order, which is the reason why I did not go back to the magic order.

[00:36:19] Badr: Whoa. What were your first comics?

[00:36:22] Badr: I think I've heard you say it was like X-Men and stuff, right?

[00:36:25] Walt: X-Men and those image books. Do you rem

[00:36:27] Badr: like what was, do you remember your, the first comic book, the issue number, or anything about it?

[00:36:32] Walt: Not really. I mean, the first time I really spent my money to go buy a comic book was. Oh, it was like a fantastic four book actually.

[00:36:39] Badr: Like you. You

[00:36:40] Walt: consciously picked it out. Yeah, cuz my dad liked it. I would read those and then sometimes I'll read like a certain Avenger books. So I remember like Black Knight being an Avenger Black Knight and I remember who was a Dr. Drew it when he was an Avenger. I be like, yo, the Avengers had some wild people in Avenger.

[00:36:57] Walt: But the first one that I really, really recall though was X Bay number one. The Jim Lee one. Mm. That's the one I really remember. Cause I remember going to my man's house and his brother had all the, um, all the leading up to those books. Yeah. And they was like, this new X-Men coming out. I was like, yo. I said, is this guy drawing me?

[00:37:15] Walt: Like, yeah, I'll be going to get this book back in the days. Probably that man that, and then also, I do remember getting consciously going to the comic book store and getting that Superman death book. I do remember that. Was it cuz

[00:37:28] Badr: you've seen that like on the news or something? It was on the news, yeah.

[00:37:30] Badr: Okay. And you were like, I'm gonna go watch this. I wanna see Superman get mur. Did you get an arm

[00:37:33] Walt: band? Yeah, it's, I still got, like if I go to my mom's house, I'm gonna have to go find it, but we still I will please. You gotta send us a picture. We still got the um, it's still like in the bag and stuff. Hell yeah.

[00:37:44] Walt: Like, I mean, I opened the bag and read the book and left the arm back in there and I just burnt the arm. I just kind of like burnt the thing back closed.

[00:37:51] Badr: Oh, damn. What? Over here? Counterfeit and sealed comics. Damn.

[00:37:56] Walt: Oh, I'll tell you the other thing too. The trade def, I can tell you the first trade paperback I got also.

[00:38:01] Walt: Oh, okay. Please def Defer. Um, Robin The, the Robin get murdered books. Oh,

[00:38:06] Badr: okay. Wow. There's a lot of, there's a lot of DC here that I didn't, I don't think we've ever got, have we ever gotten Walt's comic origin story

[00:38:12] Walt: on the hood? Oh, I mean, cuz I grew up watching, you know, almost Danny Animation. You gotta remember, man, I grew up in the eighties.

[00:38:17] Walt: Man, those DC characters were like in cartoons all the time. So like when you see all of who was your

[00:38:22] Badr: favorite cartoon as

[00:38:23] Walt: a kid, Walt. The superheroes, the DC superheroes cartoon, like the one where they had like the Legion of Doom and all that shit. That one. Oh, the ones like now

[00:38:30] Drew: are memes? Yeah.

[00:38:32] Walt: Okay. Hell yeah.

[00:38:33] Walt: So when I was a kid, like I remember, um, what was it my mom got me, like, pretty much all of those things. Who's

[00:38:41] Badr: your, who's your favorite characters from the, uh, the show? Because I know that that show had a, like a plethora of

[00:38:46] Walt: characters. They had all the characters. So the one I liked the most would probably would've been, I kinda like Aquaman.

[00:38:52] Walt: Honestly. I always thought Aquaman was pretty cool. Black Lightning was okay. And the shaming dude was okay. Damn. What

[00:38:58] Badr: you like. You've liked Aquaman as a kid. Yeah, Aquaman is fine. What is it about Aquaman that he like so much? He swims, I don't know. Shit fine.

[00:39:06] Walt: His toy was fine. He had a really cool toy. What do you like

[00:39:09] Badr: about Aquaman?

[00:39:10] Badr: He swims. So you like Mike Phelps, I guess.

[00:39:12] Walt: Yeah, Mike Phelps was that guy. So anyway, but I'll go back. So I, I was on that so much. I remember. I had enough of those toys to where if you bought like a bunch of those things you could send in like the UPCs on the back. Oh yeah. Yeah. And they would send you the um, the Stefen Wolf toy.

[00:39:32] Walt: Oh wow. Yeah. I got the Steffen Wolf toy by sending in the UPCs on the back. Yeah. I gotta see what that looks like. I don't think,

[00:39:38] Badr: holy shit, I've never heard of this story. Well, okay. Yeah,

[00:39:41] Walt: I had that toy. Damn. That's how much I've had. Like I had to haul of justice and all that shit,

[00:39:46] Badr: bro. So you started out as a DC kid.

[00:39:49] Walt: Yeah, cuz they were on TV all the time and, but I also had Spider-Man toys who had like the Spider-Man car that came with like, I had the Spider-Man that came with like the Spider-Man car or the spider mobile. I had all that shit. Were your

[00:39:59] Badr: parents buying you comic

[00:40:00] Walt: books? No, they was buying me the toys.

[00:40:03] Walt: Okay. Because I'm a, um, I'm not, yeah, I can sit, you can put, I'm sitting me in front of idiot box all day. I'll go ahead and keep it pushing. If you look up Stephen Wolf, 1980s toy.

[00:40:16] Badr: Wow. Wait, lemme see what it look like. Yeah, that's a toy. Everyone should probably just, uh, Google Image search this. Oh, wow. He looks like a, I

[00:40:22] Walt: wanna say that's a toy.

[00:40:23] Walt: Yeah. Let me

[00:40:23] Badr: look at like a Viking. Looks like a viking That's going to a raid party.

[00:40:27] Walt: A raid party, yeah. Vintage. Yeah. Mel, wave. Figure. Yep. That's the toy. Well, you got that. I had it. I mean, it may still be at the grab

[00:40:34] Badr: now. Did you answer, did you answer the question of, uh, which one pulled you into being a lifelong fan?

[00:40:39] Badr: Uh,

[00:40:40] Walt: look man, just being born into like, That type of stuff. You just kind of like, there never be a point where I don't kind of like this stuff. Yeah, like my, um, interest in it, will wa will go back and forth kinda like how wrestling is. I will always watch WrestleMania. It does not mean you're gonna watch raw every week.

[00:41:00] Walt: It's three hours long. That is too much of a commitment period. Now I may not always be overly committed, but I will always care. That's it. What's

[00:41:11] Badr: the last manga you've read Walt?

[00:41:13] Walt: Well, you know I got that app

[00:41:15] Badr: Rashaun jump up. I

[00:41:16] Walt: know you're a bleach dude. Well, yeah. I just reread bleach all the time, but I have been reading, what is it?

[00:41:20] Walt: Spy? Spy Family. The Spy Family thing. Yeah. This shit is so adorable, ain't it? So I've been reading Spy Family and also I am trying to read Chainsaw Man.

[00:41:31] Badr: Hmm. Why'd you say that? Kind of ardently. Oh

[00:41:34] Walt: no, I'm just lazy. Look, there's only so much time in a day that I had to do ev all this stuff. So I gotta read the new comic books I bought.

[00:41:46] Walt: I need to still read the two books I got on my shelf, like on my table. Then I still need to like make sure I'm staying aware of like the reality of the world we live in. So I gotta read the New York Times. The Atlantic. The Washington Post. And then whatever is in my Apple News feed. Cause I pay for Apple News.

[00:42:07] Walt: So that means on that point now I'm getting Chicago Tribune, the LA Times, and the rest of those Kane NAS magazines. So I'm getting a lot of information. Anybody got time to read, do all that reading today? Yeah, I'll read all I, I'll read papers because yeah, you're still like journalism, so. Yeah,

[00:42:24] Badr: true. You want me to follow that?

[00:42:29] Drew: What was the

[00:42:29] Walt: question? The topic of mango is what you talking about, but I'm just telling man I don't have enough time to read all of the mango. Drew, do you remember

[00:42:36] Badr: the mango that made you a fan? Like the first manga you read that blew your fucking mind away because you read a lot of manga, you were probably reading mango well before I really got into it.

[00:42:45] Walt: You the one who was playing to Yah. Well, Yahweh to me or, yeah.

[00:42:50] Drew: The, so the, the one that comes to like um, is bleach that first volume. That whole thing is dope. Like bleach. I told you bleach was fantastic. Bleach to me is so good cuz it has everything that you like, you can think of. You're like, all right, this guy is like you, like samura.

[00:43:06] Drew: Cool. We got you. This guy has a cool sword. What else is that? There's, there's demons that are called hollows. Boom. This is what happened. This kid can see them. This guy, this kid can see ghosts and like he's in the house. Did you finish bleach? No, I haven't, but like now

[00:43:20] Walt: I'm talking about, oh, I'm not gonna say anything of, okay.

[00:43:22] Walt: Serious.

[00:43:23] Badr: See, I finishing? Yeah. No bleach. Was the first manga you remember reading that blew you away?

[00:43:28] Drew: Yeah, cuz I, yeah, I, I, yeah, definitely. A hundred percent. That was the first one. I was like, oh fuck.

[00:43:32] Badr: Okay, well sell me. All right. Give me a pitch for, for bleach, because you are one of the most vocal.

[00:43:39] Badr: Champions of bleach I've ever met. Like I thought my little brothers loved bleach, but you fucking love bleach. What is it about

[00:43:46] Walt: bleach? What it was was I got into the anime first. Okay.

[00:43:51] Drew: Easy cuz it's an animated very well. I

[00:43:53] Walt: got into the anime first and then I got sick of the filler episodes of the anime.

[00:43:58] Walt: So I was like, yo, fuck this. I wanna read the mangoes. I need to know what's going on in the story. Now. What is it about the story that you like so much? I don't know. I just got into it, bro. Okay. Like once I'm into something, I'm into something. So it

[00:44:11] Badr: doesn't come from like a love of fucking, uh, swords or like, uh, the

[00:44:16] Walt: subject matter.

[00:44:17] Walt: No. I'm just a person that once, once you got me hooked. I wanna see, I'm gonna ride this story into the story in you. You know this about

[00:44:24] Drew: me. How much does the power set change? Because I'm only at the, like beginning levels. Like I'm not like, oh, I'm not,

[00:44:29] Walt: I know where you, I'm not gonna blow. I'm not gonna tell you anything.

[00:44:32] Walt: Is

[00:44:32] Drew: there any, is there any other classic one that you wish that you could have dedicated like time to, and I would honestly recommend one piece. One

[00:44:40] Walt: piece just is like, at this point, it's almost like a, um, that's a, it's a treasure. It's almost like comedic. How many issues did I think it is that, that's definitely, but one piece, it seems like I'll be, I'm more like, I started reading one piece a little bit.

[00:44:52] Walt: I read like about like the first, like, I think five issues. Heck yeah. All right. And it was fine. So the thing is, is that there are another 895 more after

[00:45:02] Drew: that. I just started. I just started and I'm on, um, Chapter 247.

[00:45:08] Walt: Okay. Which is nuts. And there's still like, like I said, there's still like seven at this point.

[00:45:13] Walt: What you got about 600 chapters or something? You

[00:45:16] Badr: are literally on like stop seven of 900. Yeah, a hundred

[00:45:19] Walt: percent. And I'm just like, that is the stop. Yeah. He's early in the stop. So yeah.

[00:45:24] Badr: Manga is such a good palate cleanser when I'm feeling tired of American comics. It's just been nice to just read manga and just, it's

[00:45:33] Drew: like tea.

[00:45:34] Badr: It's a nice tea. Yeah. Yeah. And to be like, just explore like a new genre. I was telling Wal, uh, I'm sorry. I was telling Drew, I've been reading like manga about fucking like archeology.

[00:45:44] Walt: Oh, they have weird now that's something they do, which is nuts. That they have like love story mangoes. They have like, yeah.

[00:45:50] Walt: Oh yeah. Yeah. Like, okay, so you got like a whole ass like

[00:45:55] Badr: just Panda loves this armadillo. Yes. And it's got 20 volumes. You're like god damn armadillo turtle

[00:46:00] Walt: love. Why ist armadillo banking the turtle this long? This is crazy. So yes, the basketball one and the food one. I was like, why is that food

[00:46:11] Badr: one? I have been sold on the basketball one.

[00:46:13] Badr: I kind of want to read one of them. Basketball, I heard them sports mangas. And Drew can Drew you've Uh, yes. The volleyball

[00:46:18] Drew: one called Iku is one of my favorite mangoes and anime. It's about volleyball, but it is so intense. Okay. Is it on that, is it on that app? It's on Crunchy Roll, no. Yeah, and I think it is on Trying to jump.

[00:46:29] Drew: You can read that. That one's dope. Because they break it down. Like, here's the thing, they make it look so cool with their drawings that you're able to understand the rules of the game. You're like, all right, cool. Like this is how it's played. Okay, so like there's one about tennis, there's one about ping pong, like they just stay making just like content.

[00:46:45] Drew: This

[00:46:46] Badr: feels, I wonder if this is what it felt like. To like be chasing out comic books in like the fifties or sixties

[00:46:52] Walt: where it was like, well, they weren't chasing it down. They were just waiting until the, the next thing popped up into, I guess at the Five and dime, I

[00:46:59] Badr: guess, to be, uh, good boy, I guess to be alive during comics in like that time.

[00:47:04] Badr: Right? Like where they had all these genres like western romance, sci-fi, and then

[00:47:11] Walt: superheroes. Yeah, superheroes like the, on the, to the low end of the totem pole. This, yeah.

[00:47:16] Badr: Uh, yeah, at that, during that time, and then like, it was Western. It was the

[00:47:18] Walt: horror books and it was the romance books.

[00:47:22] Badr: I guess what I'm saying is outside of, it's just crazy how like that for American comics, like as soon as superheroes took over, it is been like the reigning champ.

[00:47:30] Badr: I, I think it's hip, say like the reigning champ. Look

[00:47:32] Walt: man, because we and American comics, you, you understand the reason why, because if there's one thing Americans will never be out here doing, it's being a little bit too touchy feely. So the issue with the horror things is they were scaring kids too much and they were, I guess, too satanic for moral people of the 1940s and fifties.

[00:47:55] Walt: And then the love stories are just not going to, there's only so much you can sell boys on like love story when your audience, in essence, especially at that time were, I don't know, like eight, nine year olds. So, The only thing that's going to break through will be the Superman book. Yeah,

[00:48:16] Drew: yeah. Honestly, here's the thing, how many nine year olds, you know right now that go to the comic book shop?

[00:48:21] Drew: Like how many of them are like, how many of them are throwing a stack, like boom and you're like, oh, hey man, what's up? Oh man, you can leave. What they're doing a spider? I'm like, yo, if I see a nine, I'll be like, who the

[00:48:29] Walt: hell is this? Yeah. But, but that is a blah of just going back to something they was talking about.

[00:48:35] Walt: It was like the minute they, the minute they stopped making those books so accessible. To like the general public.

[00:48:42] Badr: Yeah. Kind of like self cannibalize stuff.

[00:48:44] Walt: It's self cannibalize. So now you can only really get these books at a shop. So that is a, that's a issue that they have to deal with. Like, you should be able to get at least, like, you should be able to get, like, you know, what you should be able to get like, um, like those essential books.

[00:49:00] Walt: Like, not really like the thick ones, but like the, um, the first issue of a image book should be right there. On the same rack that you get a, um, cuz the Archie books used to be all, all time. Yeah. The Digest, the Archie Digest books for all. That's, that's the only kind of books they constantly sell, sell in grocery stores.

[00:49:17] Walt: Those Archie Digest books. Yeah. Cuz they're

[00:49:19] Badr: so safely.

[00:49:20] Walt: Right. Like, I think those, those books have to make a bunch of money that we just don't recognize. That's a good point. Kids

[00:49:26] Badr: there Who you want, I mean, should the, the Archie um, comic company. It's still around. Still doing really

[00:49:31] Walt: well. Yeah. And they, they stopped reading, doing the Archie book that I was really, I really liked that redoing of the Archie that they did.

[00:49:38] Badr: Did you read, you've read Um, after I read it all

[00:49:39] Walt: after Archie Right? I read well after, no, I didn't read afterlife of

[00:49:43] Badr: Arch bro. That shit was amazing. Hmm. I think you would actually really fuck with afterlife. Archie probably would. That shit was incredible. I think that was for them a big leap of faith.

[00:49:53] Badr: Like when they did that, the popularity was so worth it that they were like, well, we can still cater to, they can

[00:49:59] Walt: still make that Archie book and then go

[00:50:01] Badr: back we, and still have all these, uh, banking off these

[00:50:04] Walt: grocery stores. Yeah, off the grocery. We can still make Archie and Jughead eat those hamburgers.

[00:50:08] Walt: But I

[00:50:08] Badr: like the idea of like being able to go to like Publix and instead of. Looking at just Archie Digest comics. It's like image, right? Like an

[00:50:18] Walt: Invincible Digest. They should be over there with the magazines at this point, because you gotta look at it like this. The amount of magazines that are in stores now has dwindled tremendously.

[00:50:27] Walt: So you can't, you tell me you can't put like The Spider, ma'am. You can't have like a, like the three biggest selling Marvel books, the three biggest selling DC books and the three biggest selling image books. At a grocery store at on a magazine Sand you, you tell me that this is just some impossible hill to climb.

[00:50:46] Walt: Yeah, that's absurd. Guess what? People take their bad kids to grocery stores all the time. Chin their ass right over there and just touch the book real quick. I know

[00:50:54] Badr: how we can end wrap this up on a high note, on a really high note, how excited are we about into across the spider verse being? By the time it's up as it comes out, it'll be.

[00:51:05] Badr: About a month away. And I feel like as we're getting closer and I'm realizing the weight isn't that long, I'm getting really hyped. So hyped that I went ahead and bought a fucking how bought one of them Empire magazines that you always see like, you know, posted online. Yeah, you were way too hype first.

[00:51:22] Badr: Exclusive. I was way too hyped. That Mag Way too hype. Empire Magazine is $16. What this month's issue. Is it British? It is. Okay. It a British book. But this month's, this month's issue is across the spider verse. And they always got dope covers. They always have dope covers. They always have like dedicate a couple pages to the main story.

[00:51:41] Badr: They have photos, blah, blah, blah. Yeah. You get a couple like

[00:51:43] Drew: little

[00:51:44] Badr: snippets. Exactly. And they interview the whole cast and I'm like, hype. I'm like, oh damn. You know, learning all this shit about behind the scenes, the different worlds I'm hype about across the spider verse and I gotta know from you guys, are y'all on the same level?

[00:51:57] Badr: Are y'all like ready for this shit to drop? Do you have any expectations? What do you think about the trailer so far?

[00:52:04] Walt: Um, the trailer looks fine. This movie will be great, but this is the year in essence, where they're trying to get all of us to go back to the movies. So, if I'm being a hundred percent honest with you, that trailer is no better or worse than the Barbie trailer, which is no better or worse than the Oppenheimer trailer, which is no better or worse than the, um, evil dead trailer that came out, that came out this week, and they want us to go back to the movies.

[00:52:32] Walt: So guess what? They're making a bunch of movies for us to go back

[00:52:35] Badr: to. It is pretty, it's been a pretty good as year for movie. It's, it's been a pretty,

[00:52:39] Walt: it's been an extremely good year for me. Yeah, it's been a very eventful year. So that's what I'm really saying is that I know that movie's not gonna be bad.

[00:52:45] Walt: Mm-hmm. I'm not even concerned about that movie being bad. It is probably be, it'll probably be one of the top five movies that come out this year. Okay. If we've been honest, no. It'll probably be the movie that makes the most outta any comic book movie. Also, I'm

[00:52:57] Badr: down for that prediction a hundred percent.

[00:52:59] Badr: Spider-Man, bro. Drew, who, what character are you hoping to see the

[00:53:02] Drew: most? Spider-Man, 2009. Here's the, like, as far as side characters, I'm they, I haven't seen anything. Is this spider new or in this one I haven't seen him. Or Spider. I've seen 2099. That's the one I'm excited about. But Spider punk. Oh,

[00:53:14] Badr: spider Punk's gonna be so well,

[00:53:15] Walt: spider Puck is super hard and all these things.

[00:53:16] Walt: Spider punk

[00:53:17] Badr: is super hard. I'm excited to hear and see. Uh, Issa Rae playing Spiderwoman. I feel like she's Issa Rae's playing Spiderwoman in this. Yeah, right. Who's

[00:53:26] Drew: she playing? Jessica Drew. Jessica Drew? Yeah. Oh, okay.

[00:53:29] Walt: There Two Spider. There's two Spider. Larry Isa Ray is also in the Barbie movie. Yes. Know why I'm kinda hypey for this Barbie movie?

[00:53:36] Walt: Because once I seen the thing, the trailer for the Barbie, when they was like, Hey Barbie, I'm

[00:53:40] Badr: Barbie. I'm watching. I have not seen it for some reason. Have you not seen a trailer? I have not seen the trailer. For some reason, bro, that movie's looks ridiculous. You know what? What I'm most curious about this across the biodiverse is to see how they, because it looks like the main protagonist is gonna be spot.

[00:53:56] Badr: It looks like maybe some of the Spiderman 2099 or something like that. But thinking about that first one, how good kingpin and like Prowler were like, I don't like how balanced all the characters were. Doc Hawk,

[00:54:11] Walt: it'll be, look like I say, that movie going to. Like, I'm not even worried about it. Like, nah, I'm not worried about at this point.

[00:54:16] Walt: That's one of those,

[00:54:16] Drew: like, this is gonna be a Spider-Man movie through and through. They're gonna put miles to the ringer on this one. The first one they took away is uncle, the second one. We don't know who they're gonna take, but it's gonna be somebody.

[00:54:27] Badr: Well, like we've talked about, we're gonna try to make a short box event happen and ran out theater to watch instead of Spider Verse with our closest friends.

[00:54:34] Badr: So, well, maybe that could be your, um, maybe that could be your, your, your, uh, Short box re debut

[00:54:40] Walt: because it's been a minute, it's been a minute since I've been out in public. All right,

[00:54:44] Badr: Jess, I think it's a good time to wrap this up. Are you guys talk? We covered everything I wanted to hear.

[00:54:48] Walt: Okay. I will say go see meat sweats is

[00:54:50] Badr: still, uh, sweat working this way.

[00:54:52] Badr: Don't sleep on

[00:54:53] Walt: kabobs. Yeah, and I will also say go see that new what? Evil Dead rising. If you ain't seen it, Ida Robin was really entertaining, if you like those IDA movies. Okay.

[00:55:03] Badr: That's a good, well, any, uh, any other words of wisdom? Parting words, closing remarks?

[00:55:09] Walt: Unless you have a serious issue with your mother, you don't need to go see Bos afraid.

[00:55:16] Walt: And that's So I'll leave it at that.

[00:55:20] Badr: I thought you were gonna say something really sentimental and sweet. Nope. But of course I'm dealing with a wall. He's gonna leave it. He's gonna drop, he's gonna subvert my expectations. Awesome. Drew, what about you, man? Any closing remarks? Last words. You wanna hit us off on anything?

[00:55:34] Badr: Alright, ju just

[00:55:35] Drew: kebabs and then ba Pokemon. That's it. That's

[00:55:38] Badr: a weird combo,

[00:55:39] Drew: right? Hey, man, let your mind wander wherever it is. S Shishkabobs and Pokemon cards. Word.

[00:55:45] Badr: All right folks. I hope you guys enjoy the conversation. Peace.
