Catching up with Walt: Black Panther 2's original script, how to improve digital comics, and Cyclops was right - The Short Box Podcast Ep. 484

00:01
intro music plays

00:24
All good.  All right. We just cook real quick. Yeah, we got like put it like this. got like another strong hour and a half, maybe two. No, we don't need all that time. We don't need all that time. But I'm  thinking  I'm thinking this will will go on the main. We'll go through it all. We'll just go through some shit real quick and just shoot the shit. I did pull a couple of articles.

00:48
Okay, not a lot like one or two.  All right,  and then I want to go through this stack of comics  that apparently you need to go through yourself I'm gonna do  look  are we already we pod and pod right now. We pod and pod and okay This is like the warm-up. Just keep this in. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. So I Completely forgot you were shooting up here this week. Okay, cuz if I  had remembered that the one thing I would have did was

01:15
I don't know, read all these comic books. This is about, I think this stack of comics, I'd say about 30. That's two months for me right now. Two months worth. That's two months How are you getting your comics right now? Between, okay, so the way I'm getting my comics is we do the two, the DC joint. The DC Universe app. And the Marvel limited app. And then there are certain books that I just bought on general principle.

01:43
Okay. So what I'm going to be going doing going forward for the most part is buying  mainly just indie books. Okay.  And then unless someone who is writing a book who I really, really like is on a major, then I'll buy those books. Well, how are you getting like this stack of books you have right now? How are you getting those mailed?  Okay. My comic book shop closed. That's right. They no longer have a physical location. He has a new physical location. Where's that? is wildly out of my way.

02:12
So how far is wildly out of your way? It's like about a 25, 30 minute. OK, OK. 25, 30 minutes away if I drove. Does he charge you for shipping? Sometimes. Sometimes he don't. Depending on. he fuck up, he definitely don't charge me because there'll be books that he'd be forgetting. How about that? How about that? How about we before we get into the headlines I have, I'm going to flip through the stack of books that you have. Those are like, that's the rest of the new God run.

02:40
So it's safe to assume that the books that I'm flipping through right now are the books in your pull list. This is my pull list. This is basically my pull list that I have not read. So you are pulling New Gods. Yep. And this  is about four issues worth. That's the rest of that run. OK. What comes to mind? Or how do you feel about this series, The New Gods? I liked it enough to continue reading it. Fair enough. V is probably one of my favorite new writers.  It was compelling enough and I kind of just like  new. I like.

03:10
One of those people who actually likes the eternals and new gods. Yeah, they're the same special breed of people. They're the same characters. So if you like one, you should like the other. OK, and then now we're getting into your Wonder Woman's. So you are got one issues 24, 25, 26, 27. So it's to say this is about four months worth. Wait, four months? Maybe, but he'd be.

03:33
forgetting to put shit in, then don't put shit in, that type of shit. Okay, how is this Wonder Woman? And we're talking about the Tom King and Sam Pre-run. You already know how I feel about Tom King, even though he dissed me on the pod. Wait, wait, wait, wait, Well, he didn't really diss me, but you know, he was like, if your man was a bigger fan of me, he'd be here right now. I suck with this book. Tom King, feisty. Okay, and then next up is you got an issue of... That's the first issue of Die.

03:59
The first issue of Dying. So that's basically, okay, so I don't know when that came out. would assume by the Because you were a Kieran Gillan man, so you collect basically anything by him. For the most part, yeah. So I got that first issue of Dying. mean, I probably got like two of them in there right now. Okay, and then you have issues 11, 12, 13 of Power Fantasy. Is it 13? Yeah, 11, 12, 13. Okay, cool, cool, How's this series? How's Power Fantasy? Power Fantasy's been good, but that's a book that I'm gonna have to reread again. Yeah, it's pretty dense.

04:28
It's way too dense. It is very dense. And Karen Galeon don't really write anything straightforward. He don't write nothing that you can just like half pay attention to. So what I'm to have to do at some point when this story ends, I'm going to have to read it again.  And while you strike me as someone, do you go back to your single issues?  If they aren't on the app that I got, then yes.  Because you have to, certain books you have to reread. Okay, fair enough.

04:54
All right. And then I'm excited about this next view.  This is from Ignition Press,  Voyeur by Leo Williams and David Baldione. OK, so they wrote what is the deal with this? They wrote one of my favorite Cocoa books.  were the creative team. They were the ones that were doing X Factor. OK, that's how I got up on Leo Williams in general. Do you know, I guess, do know what the premise of this is?  Not at all. This is what I like. You are very loyal to a creative team, whether it be a writer or artist, you

05:24
or like if they write one thing I like, you're willing to kind of follow them. You follow creators. 100%. Okay. Cause seeing Ignition Press on it, cause I don't know if you know much about Ignition Press. I know nothing They are a very new publisher. Yeah, they would have to be. They came out last year and they've got like Stephanie Williams is writing for them, Tony Fleeks. I rocked with old girl. She made a really good X Factor run and then the duo, I kind of like his art.

05:50
Okay. And then  I personally know what the deal of this is, but uh next up you've got the voice said kill. Soon as my baby, soon my baby's in there drawing. I was like, y'all bought this shit. The voice said kill being published by image written by Simon Spurrier art by your girl, Vanessa Del Rey. I didn't know this was a four issue limited series. So you've got the remaining issues two, three, and four to read. I read the first issue and then didn't read no more. And then I got the stuff you sent me from.  Oh, so I don't know if listeners know, but I send you.

06:18
Cause you're a patron of the show, which is very meta. Not only are you the player president, but you're also the number one supporter. And I send you an annual care package. I actually forgot what I sent you. So I sent you the free comic book based Star Wars. The only thing I don't have in this stack from you is basically the graphic novel you sent me. Cause that's in the back. Have you seen the poster that I sent you? Have you opened this I opened it up, I feel like once. did open it up once. Speaking of the Ignition press, I gave you the Roots of Madness Ashcan.

06:48
I don't know if you're a fan of Stephanie Williams, but I think I will fuck with it because it's in that sack of books. Guess what is going to happen. OK, I think you be read Avengers Twilight Book One because I feel like you would really like this chips. Is Darcy Daniel Kuna. And then I sent you the free comic book day. Fantastic Four. This is a nice stack. Well, this is like diversified. You got your your big twos. You got some Indies. You got some creator fan favorites. How long do you think it would take for you to get through the stack? If I'm not bullshitting tomorrow.

07:18
It'll take me till Sunday to read. You're a binge consumer, right? Like when you lock in on like say movies or comics. because I kind of have to.  The world has made all of us in essence, binge consumers. Even though we don't want to be binge consumers, we're all kind of some point binge consumers because you have to dedicate the time that you have to be doing a task. So when I sit down and when I start reading  those books, I'm going to read them all.

07:48
I don't think  I sit with single issues as much as I used to. I  think because I've made such a conscious effort of trying to read more novels and book books,  I think I prefer that format. we all do, but this is not a medium that leans itself toward that. Agreed. But I think I'm always perpetually a little behind.  reading single issues is easier digital.

08:14
And then I prefer now things like I think DC Compact Comics is one of my favorite new mediums. Have you had a chance to like look at those at all? No, are those the ones they're selling in the airports and shit? Oh, I guess they would be selling them in airport. Yeah, it's like the the small kind of manga sized books. They're 10. They're always $10. They collect a full story. Oh, those are the ones that if you go on the app, those are the ones that are like right below what you go. That's right. DC Universe does post. They post those books on there. So like if you go.

08:43
Let's say you go to your single issue. Those are the, you said go, right? DC go. No, I said the Compact Comics. So the Compact Comics are the physical, they're basically trades, but smaller. They're like manga sized trades for the most part that collect like, um like this month they put out the Supergirl Woman for Tomorrow trade in that size. And I like them because I can leave them on the porch where I do most of my reading. They're lightweight. If I want to bring them with me and they collect the whole story. um

09:12
That Supergirl story is insane. That Supergirl story is- That story, they gotta be pushing it in every format of everything they make. You know this year. I mean, it's a smart decision. They know what they're doing. Because look, that is the main movie they pushing, right? Is there another movie that's coming out from DC? Other than Supergirl? I believe it's just Supergirl. Oh no, it's Clayface. And Clayface, yeah, you're right. I believe we're getting a Clayface movie. That's wild. I mean, shit, he's showing the diversity of that line.

09:41
Like this is something that Marvel tried to do, but they pushed everybody to the Disney Plus app. So a quick Google search says that the Clayface movie, which will be directed by James Watkins,  producers Matt Reeves, James Gunn's Peter Saffron,  screenplay by Mike Flanagan is set to release September  11th of this year. That's just a wild day.  This might be TMI, but my brother-in-law  is actually getting married.

10:10
the same day. Yo, that's crazy also. So yeah, we're getting a Supergirl and Clayface this year. We're getting a Clayface and your brother-in-law here for the same day. Two unions. What? What comic book movie are you most looking forward to this year? Well, Adventures Doom's day, obviously, but isn't a Spider-Man movie supposed to come out this year? Let me see what we got.

10:38
There used to be a time and place where we would know this like the back of our hands, know, short box circa 2012, 2013. Yeah, but we didn't got older. OK, it says Spider-Man brand new day starring Tom Holland directed by Destin Daniel swings in the theaters on July 31st, 2026. That movie's coming out first. So if I want to see how he ends this saga. You think this will be the end of the Spider-Man saga for for Tom Holland? Yeah.

11:08
Why would he continue making Spider-Man? Well, you know what? Why not? Hold hold hold is better question. Okay, okay. Now that I'm saying this out loud.

11:18
Chris Henswer is the only one who said, I'll keep making these movies forever. Yeah, he's like, I love being able to not worry about a damn thing once some Disney check. Basically, I like to get me a Disney check and then I can go out here and make whatever else I can go make a weird Ghostbusters girl movie. He's also  out here doing a uh National Geographic series.  He's having an existential crisis on TV with us. Yeah, because basically, look, people hated that last

11:48
Well, I ain't gonna say people hated the last No, they definitely hated I think that'd be an understatement. I don't know why they hated the last Well, I guess... Were you in the minority?  I'm in the minority on Wow. But I will say this. The reason why they hated it more than anything else is because  maybe the last Thor... Love and Thunder. We're talking about Thor, Love We're talking about Love and Thunder.  Maybe they should have brought back Kenneth Branagh. Kid who? Kenneth Branagh, the guy who made the first Thor.  Ah. Because  maybe that Thor shouldn't have been his Jokey.

12:17
Maybe they should have just, someone should have had an executive producer. Maybe, but at the same time, the one thing that I'm not, the one thing that people be bitching about about these Marvel movies right now is that they have too much oversight. Really? I feel like this last phase almost feels like it hasn't had enough. They had too much oversight. That's why these movies, that's why the movies, people tripped on the movies. Because I would almost say that the first couple of phases, the first three, four, or I guess the first three had plenty of oversight because they were,

12:46
they were marching towards such a definitive They had a definitive plan and then, like I say, old boy got in his situation and that fucked up the whole thing. So they had to immediately flip in between number one and then number two, to me at least, is that James Gunn is right about one particular thing. Those scripts need to be done. Finalized, solidified, signed, sealed, delivered.

13:12
They're looking at scripts, it seems like they're probably looking at scripts halfway through the thing. And making changes. then guess what? If you're doing that, you got too much oversight. Because guess, if you got a full script that's good to go, guess what you don't need no more? No more fucking oversight. You know, I'm kind of glad you brought this up because oh one of the topics I had for the show today.

13:35
And both of these news articles and headlines I'm going to share with you come from Comicsbeat.com, which is my go-to place for comics. Yeah, because now they started to put too much AI shit on comic book sites, which is nuts. Yeah, the listicles are out of hand now. Oh my God. Comicsbeat had an article this week that talked about Ryan Coogler shared what his original Black Panther 2 story was going to be.

14:00
before Chadwick Boseman unfortunately passed Yeah, it probably would basically been the gist of that Neymar Black Panther. Let me share with you real quick. So apparently it was going to be centered on Black Panther and his son. It was going to be a little more focused on that. So I guess Ryan Cooler was on a podcast this week, and I wish I would have wrote down. Oh, he was on, he did the variety thing with Spike Lee. Was that in that thing? No, no, this was a different podcast. Let me see if I could pull that up. Whatever that podcast is, let me pull that up, because I'm going listen to that.

14:28
It was, yeah, Ryan Coogler was on the Happy Sad Confused podcast hosted by Josh Horowitz. He's gonna giving shit to Joe Budden, if we're being honest.  Has Ryan Coogler ever gone on Joe Budden? He needs to go on there because he fucked with that podcast. Cause they was mad that,  they was talking about the Dr. Umar thing. He was like, why did black parents that got all these Mexicans in here beating these black people ass?

14:54
Only on the job of a black guy. So so Ryan Coogler I guess shared what the original script of Black Panther 2 which he showed Chadwick Boseman  Just never had a bozen should see that thing uh gave me his notes before you pass out there But he didn't have a chance to like  like actually go through and read for the script, but he did share it He said okay The big thing about the script was a thing called the ritual of eight where when a prince is eight years old  referring to Black Panther son in this movie He has to go spend eight days in the bush with his father

15:24
The rule is for those eight days, the prince can ask the father any question and the father has to answer. During the course of those eight days, Namor launches an attack. It was a different version of Namor in that script, but T'Challa had to deal with someone who's insanely dangerous, but because of this ritual, his son had to be joined at his hip the whole time or else they'd violate this ritual that had never been broken. It was insane and Chad was gonna kill it, but life goes as it goes.

15:51
And he goes on to say that, you know,  they couldn't really,  uh, he obviously had to pivot from that original script and shift the focus more on the women of Wakanda.  I that movie's fantastic. I think that movie, I think for the situation that that movie had to deal with, that movie is great. Yeah. It's not a movie that you watch for fun because I think it is. It's too sad. It is. It's a lot of emotional baggage, a lot of weight to it, but good Lord, is it fantastic? And I think it is such a great successor to the

16:21
to the first one, which felt very Shakespearean, also  very dramatic.  yeah, I think the second one is a fantastic, phenomenal movie. Yep. I need to listen to this podcast. So just shoot it to me. Yeah. Well, just shoot that article to me, then I go find a podcast.  And then,  the other news headline topic I had. Yeah, I don't think it's no secret. Me and you share a couple  of streaming apps, because that's what best friends do. All We share passwords, and we share streaming apps.

16:50
Because yo, the hustle, I'm sorry, the struggle is still very real. The struggle stay real, bro. These shit cost too much money. It costs a lot of money. um And we both read a lot of digital comics.  And this particular headline right here, I'm not sure if you're familiar with Global Comics, but it's one of the newer digital comic platforms that have debuted in the last couple of years. uh I think actually last year I had a chance to interview the CEO. uh I do remember that, OK. Really good guy. I do enjoy the platform a lot. I actually have a gold membership. Big shout out to Global Comics.

17:20
But they're doing something now where this article from Comics Beat says, Global Comics announces Marvel Mondays, where every Monday they will announce um a couple of Marvel titles that will be free to read for gold tier members. So every Monday, a handful of Marvel comics will  be available to read for free. And then they'll stay as part of the Global Comics library. And then they'll continue doing that every Monday.

17:47
uh And actually it just started this year. So this January is when they started doing this. Right now, the first wave of Marvel comics that are available. You got Jeff the Land Shark, issues one through three. You got the Magic series from 2025, one through five. Marvel Rivals issue one. Marvel Rivals Hellfire Gala number one. And then, like I said, every Monday they're to be putting out. OK, so you just named, aren't most of those books digital books except for that magic book? You know, I'm not, I think so. Yeah.

18:16
The rest of those books I think are just kind of like the Marvel, that digital thing. What is the Marvel, the Infinite comics? The Infinite. I think those other books you mentioned are all Infinite comics, except for the Magic Do you ever read any of the vertical scroll comics on DC or Marvel? I read them on Marvel, but I only read the X-Men books. But now the X-Men are about to put me off on that one because they just went back to some throwback shit. And I'm like, yeah, I'm cool on throwback shit. What do mean throwback?

18:45
They running with a book right now that  will be based in the period where they still live to the mansion.  And you're like, no mansion for me. No mansion for Doug.  No mansion for Doug. You want them back on Krakow. That's your thing.  they're not going back to Krakow. Tom Breaver has had his, he had his way and he won. His way is dumb. Full stop.

19:11
I knew it was dumb because you rarely ever have anything bad to say about X-Men. So when they decided to get rid of the Croaker era and you were like, I'm done with X-Men, that was a big deal for me. I just pulled. I I would never go to X-Men after that. Now, I'm going to check this new Eve Yorn book that's coming out. That's X-Men United or whatever. That would be the only X-Men book I'm having my poor. Yeah. Other than that, I'm cool, bro. I'm cool.

19:39
And it's not that the creative team is bad. It's just that in this time that we're living in right now, the last thing I want to see is people,  this is my getaway. You can't have my getaway going back to some 1960 shit again, after you just kind of did what they should be doing in the first place. Now, some of the storyline things and whatever,  we all have our feelings about this shit. Anyway.

20:09
I enjoy some of the vertical scroll comics on both the DC app and the Marvel app. I think the last one that really impressed me,  because I noticed that the Marvel Unlimited app was taking  older, not even that old, but older stories and converting them to  vertical scroll. They also have a bunch of new stories. Yeah, they've got original comics. think, like you said, there was an X-Men book on there that was original, and there's an Avengers book on There's a Spider-Man comic that's only digital on that app.

20:38
Which I think is a good look. think  having some sort of exclusivity and having a more incentive. I that scroll better than like  the flip. I think it's case by case. There was they converted Jeff Lemire's Moon Knight series  into that vertical scroll. And I thought they executed that pretty well. um I think if they do it because, know, like there's intention behind it, like  they actually take the panels and restructure them into that vertical scroll. And sometimes it just it just it just flows better.

21:04
Yeah, yeah, it really does flow better. feels, I mean, they really live up to the name Infinite. It does feel like you're reading one single comic. I don't know how to quite What is Jeff Lemire doing right now? Jeff Lemire is doing a JSA comic. He's doing a Arcania. So he's doing DC. Oh, he's doing well. OK. Yeah, he's doing pretty well for himself. Yeah. I don't know if he's doing any Marvel stuff. know he's working don't think he's doing any Marvel He's doing the Absolute Flash series. OK, so he's just full DC right now.

21:30
I'm gonna go on a complete tangent here. I'm looking at just a list of topics I wrote the talk Man, just write them down, we'll go. Actually, I got a comment on one of the YouTube, one of the episodes I posted on YouTube. It was from an episode I did like two years ago where I reviewed the Frank Miller doc. Someone had recently commented that, damn, it's crazy, and I'm paraphrasing, damn, it's crazy that this doc is still not for sale. And it reminded me, yeah, what the hell are they doing over there? I was about to say, because you know what?

22:01
I feel like you may have, no, you sent me, not to Frank Miller, who was the other person that had a that came out recently? There was a Alex Ross doc that came out. Not Alex Ross. was Mike Mignola doc. That's on Amazon. The Mignola one is the one I think you sent me. That Mignola doc is fantastic. Is it Monsters and Men or something that affect? I think that's the one that's in our thing. Actually, here's the name of the user. Big shout out to Powerpuff Possum who commented earlier today.

22:28
Wish I could buy this doc, can't believe it's not available. I agree. And this Frank Miller doc, like I said, came out about two years ago. It was an exclusive, like IMAX screening for one night only. I remember this. That part I remember. It was a great doc. was like, wow, this is- And you weren't gonna see it. Yeah, and thinking that, oh, in about a month, this will be available for sale on Amazon Prime. Not quite yet. And I think, I love me a good comic book doc. Whoa.

22:54
Like, that Mike Mignola doc was great, the Alex Ross doc was great. I think last year was a great time for comic book doctors. I'm one of them people that believes that people who do extraordinary shit in their fields do deserve some level of a documentary. Who would you want to see get a doc in the comic book space? Jim Lee, he won 100%. Jim Lee has actually had a wild career. What are some things that you'd want them to highlight for Jim Lee? Hold on, I'm not dumb. But I'm saying like,

23:21
Jim shooter. There's certain people who have basically the gym league kind of career,  but you would have to talk about his, his rise, his continued rise and his never really fallen off rise. Has Jim Lee never fallen off? Never fallen off. Everyone else around him has had the only other person in his group really, I guess Eric Lawson didn't fall off and neither did  McFarland cause McFarland basically pivoted out of college. Oh, McFarland.

23:50
McFarland just said, just gonna make these. Technically, I don't think he's really pivoted out of comics. He's still heavily involved with Spawn. Yeah, yeah, he's involved with, is he still writing Spawn? I think he's still right here. I'll see if I can find, confirm that, but I think he is still writing it or at least co-writing it. Double check on that. But the main thing he's been doing is these. It's too good to believe. But he's been selling these $200 toys forever. When I, oh no, he's still actively listed as the writer for Spawn.

24:19
Okay, so he's writing. Okay, so he's still writing spawn. Can you guess real quick if you had to just guess what number is spawn up to right now? Spawn started when 1992. Yeah, so I thought in 92. 350 good guess 375. Okay, that means Savage Dragon is about the same number. So don't three other ones that didn't have like no weird shit from the jump over everyone else kind of like disappeared or whatever, because I feel like didn't Jim.

24:49
Let me, hold on, let me make sure before I say some crazy.  Um, cause it was him. was Jim Lee. was all the ex. It was an Exodus. are we, trying to name this a seven founders? So it would be Jim Lee. was all the X-Men writers. one. was Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, um Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, Wills Patascio. So those were the three X-Men people. Then you had Jim Valentino. Yep.

25:19
You had Eric Larson. Come on Walt two more. You had Tom McFarland Tom McFarland. I love McFarland. I think you say Eric Larson already. I didn't say Eric Larson. All right, it hit it. I said the three I said the three exodus. It was exodus first and then I said Valentino and then I said, um Well, I'm gonna just give it to you because I think you got it right. There's seven of them motherfuckers and what happened with Valentino? That's the one I don't know about

25:47
You know, yeah, Valentino and potassium potassium shows up every so often. Yeah, I ain't seen no ice like shit about Jim Valentino in 20 years. Feel like. Let me see if I can pull up any info on Jim Valentino  on Liga Comic Geeks. What is his most recent thing? It looks like he did  some work for Image Comics on a series called Rat Queens that ended in 2019. OK, my main thing is that I still with us about to kill him.

26:14
Maybe he's like editor in chief over at Image. That's all I can really find. Oh, that's fine. But besides that, everyone else is doing pretty well. I know Eric Larson is still doing Savage Dragon. I know Rob Liefeld is still out here. Rob Liefeld got a Youngblood story going on right now. a Youngblood story. He's out here on social media every day. God, I mean, criticizing Marvel out the ass every Why does he still give a fuck? You know, I don't know.

26:42
I don't know why Rob Liefeld does what he rest of those people don't care. They don't.  You know, because  they've got plenty to keep them busy. McFarlane and Jim Lee, though, I feel like are the exceptional superstars of the group, with McFarlane still heavily involved with Image. I mean, his toy company keeps him busy. I don't know if you've seen some of his latest toys and dioramas, but this man has to be stopped. I don't have to see it to know that whatever it is, it's going to run you a buck fifty.  Ah, man, shit. oh

27:12
I bought a Spider-Man diorama that was like it had like it was supposed to be like the you know I'm just gonna show the city scape. It was beautiful Walt. I'm telling you his toys have only gotten better. That dude was an awesome drawer when we were kids when I was a kid and now he don't have to draw that much now that he's only that dude probably draw once a month but it's a such a detailed drawing. This is what I recently bought it was like this Spider-Man corner box diorama.

27:40
$30, $40. Okay. Oh, so it's a good price. Very good price. He knows how to keep it just the right place. was assuming that he was drawing like them fancy ass, you know, when you see them, um, those big chested, like, um, like anime chicks in the statues. Yes. That's I thought he was over there kind of doing, but not like the big chested girl just doing it for everything. So it says, see like an Orihime thing. Like, Oh yo, you did Orihime like on a wild level, bro.

28:10
think he'll do the  rare,  like he's got a couple of like Gunslinger spawn cover. He does like a couple of covers here and there. Obviously he's not out here. Did I tell you that I went to see him at New York Comic-Con? He had hosted this panel in the entire- Just recent one? Yeah, 2025. It  was like this uh retailer summit panel. Yeah. And Todd McFarlane was the special guest of honor. So they had like a  host,  a panelist, a moderator, sorry, a moderator.

28:37
Asking him questions. mean, granted, he just asked the question and then shut up for an entire time. And McFarland spent the entire hour with he was not seated. He stood up and had one foot on the table in front of him and he was kind of like leaned over. And that's how he spent like the entire hour talking. And when I tell you he had nothing but bar, my man was dropping shims. You know, I love telling him. I'll tell you something about him that I always liked. He's one of them. Remember how we talked about those kind of

29:07
how much a comic book is worth.  He was one of those people who instead of buying comic books for his bread, he would buy an old-ass baseball card. Cause I feel like he had like a,  I  don't know if he had a Honest Wagner. I don't know if he had that Honest Wagner card, I feel like he had like worst case scenario, had that Mickey Mantle rookie card.  Worst case scenario, that car was going for a million back then when he bought it.

29:35
Well, you know, he had I think some of the earliest toys he produced were baseball and sports. I believe that 100 percent. I do watch sports. I do watch that dude. No ball. Can you know he no baseball for sure? He no ball for sure. No ball. All right. Like I said, I'm just going to be jumping around some random around. You know, I can go, you know, I don't even I'm going to to record an intro, a fresh intro for this because we just hit the ground running for I would say don't had an intro.

30:00
I say just hit the ground running. That's how we're doing in 2026. Yeah, we don't hit the ground running, bro. You're saying the real ones will know what's up. Yeah, man. The real soon as they hear the voice, they're to know what time they're to be like, oh, shit, it's January. Bader always goes down to Orlando. tell you what. Hit it. We can just have the intro now. Let's do it right now in the middle of the pod in the middle of the pod. He's like, hey, I'm here with Walt. We cook it.

30:23
Listeners, if you have been spending the last 40 minutes listening, we've been doing it for 40 already. Easy 40. That's I'm saying. An easy 40. We've been on cruise control. We're driving down 95. We were on cruise control the entire time because I drove down from Jax to Orlando to see you again as part of my annual retreat to come see you. And I always feel like these episodes are a nice way to start the new year because it's like it's not an interview. It's not a review.

30:51
It's just me chopping it  up. And I think anyone that's been listening for more than a year knows it's just part of the deal. uh We talked about the Marvel Infinite comics and I think DC, I forget what DC calls it. I think they're called, oh yeah, DC Go. I that's what they call I think those digital, I think those platforms, whether it be DC Infinite, now I'm getting everything mixed up, is DC Unlimited?

31:19
No, Marvel Unlimited and DC Universe. Sorry, I'm getting mixed up.  I think those platforms or global comics or something like Neon Ichiban, it is crazy to see how many different digital comic platforms have come out in the last couple of years. You gotta meet the people where they at. For sure. will say if I had to  rank them, if I had to rank them, global comics to me  edges out

31:48
in my one, it's always one, a or second place because of the variety of comics they have. And I don't know if you've had a chance to like check out global comics. If not, I'll share with you my log and you can get a taste of it. But they not only have Marvel and DC, but they have image. They also have wild indie stuff. They've got like creator own things. They've also got, I mean, it's in the name global comics. They've got comics from like.

32:13
people in  Egypt, Africa, Asia, it's a very open platform where if you're a creator,  you can uh apply to have your comics put on there. Which I think is a good look, it's a diversity thing. Anyways, that said, it got me thinking about the digital comic space in these platforms  and how I think one of the things I would like to see improved upon  in the comic book space is more  younger

32:41
creators and fresh faces. um Given an opportunity to like get their stuff. They'll be able to do that on digital. They won't be able to do that on the hard print.  Sure, and that's for you. There's so many costs involved. And that in the long run will probably, I hate to sound like the old ass curmudgeon here, but that would be a net negative because comic books is one of those things. Like  obviously we like to

33:09
We like to read them because we're, we're just seasoning. So I don't need to own books, but the collectability  aspect of the shit  is dumb important. It's important for some people. It's important for the medium, like full stop. So like you can get those folks in the door, but at some point those books that they created that were digital do need to, if those books pick up and take off.

33:39
They need to be able to be perfect. Now they have done that. In the case of Marvel DC, they have done where it's not so much Marvel DC. I'm talking about the indie people. That's fair. That's fair. they need to at least even if they go have like, let's say like a worldwide like, I don't know, let's say like a thousand dollar or a thousand print run. You run it. Because what people collect comic books like.

34:07
People read comic books, but people really, that's a collector thing. That's like how we was talking about buying records and shit today. It's the same stuff. I don't check. We don't have to technically ever go buy a record. Sure. We're buying that because we're collecting those records because we love that record. And we want to support. We want to support that person. And I do agree. think comic books is still a very physical first. It's a physical. The tactile feel is important. It's the same thing with all this stuff. Like you take stuff more seriously.

34:37
if you can hold it in your hand.  Well, and that brings me to this brand new idea I had and wrote down is that imagine if something like an image  or  an ignition press or whatever allowed  fresh, you know, obviously there's, there's going to be a uh quota and a criteria to, you know, I don't know, an application process, whether whatever it may be, you can't just open the floodgates to any and everyone.  But imagine if there was an opportunity for  young uprising creators

35:07
to do a digital first comic on these platforms. They need to be doing that. And there was just an entire line of digital first, hey, these are brand new comics by brand new creators that we co-sign. And that is kind of how they would gauge, like, which ones would get a print first or a print version of it. They need to do that. And my thing is, if you can get a story going longer than 20 issues, then you just need to have a print stuff anyway.

35:35
Yeah, I like I would love to see a line on whatever the more I feel like I keep saying Marvel in the DC app because those are just so because those are the most ubiquitous one. Sure. So if they specifically had like a  segment, basically, that's like I'm saying Def Jam or Warner Brothers is the same. It's the same. But if they had a section on those apps, I was like, hey, these are stories written by brand new writers, brand new artists, whatever brand new creators.

36:00
that are indie, they're up and rising. You know what saying? I just think that comic books needs more of an injection of newer voices and younger voices at that to keep it going. do this, but the issue is now that comic books like cartoon and everything else is running into a mangled problem.  that um these kids is too used to read, kids are too used to watch anime. So these folks can drop the ball on like just American made um

36:30
just not like in essence kind of like teen like tween to  young adult stuff because they just felt it wasn't I  guess they felt it wasn't the market for it outside of like having one or two like Marvel just completely just disregarded this thing for like 40 years. There are no real Marvel TV show like cartoon TV shows like they dropped that X-ray 97 but

36:57
People that watch X-Men 97 was watching that thing in 93 or 94 or whatever, whatever the OG drop. those kids now, at those kids, that's why DC, if I'm keeping it a buck, that's why DC has been able, like with this new relaunch of everything that DC been doing, DC been on fire the whole damn year. It's not even close. Like that's just a full stop. Number one publisher right now is them. So.

37:27
but they never ever stop making cartoons. You still get new, you still get what? Like four or five DC animated movies a year. I don't know. don't know if you get four or five, but let's say, let's say you get two to three. yeah, the DC animated universe is pretty strong. Never stopped. It has never stopped. I wonder what they released in the last couple of years. I don't know if you go to that thing. They like, would go and look, if you go look up DC animated,

37:56
This DC animated universe or whatever. They got something there say 2025. Not to mention they got weeks. got daily. They got regular cartoons that come on. Even though they come on HBO Max and shit. They got Harley Harley Quinn. Come on, TBS, bro. Oh, really? TBS. 100 percent. I've been sitting up after a basketball game or after something after a baseball game. Oh, yeah. We're going to run Harley Quinn. So just the quick.

38:21
overview on Google says the DC animated universe has evolved of its main era ending around 2020 transitioning into the standalone tomorrow verse which concluded with Justice League crisis on infinite Earths in 2024. Recent releases include Justice League crisis and infinite Earths part three 2024 with upcoming projects for 2025 and beyond. Actually, you know what? You're right, because the James Gunn monster. Basically, James Gunn read the room and knew that people.

38:50
Once they got people low key, once they got people hooked on that Bruce Timm universe. Creature Commandos was uh literally an animated TV series.  never stopped making those cartoons. And I used to love the Marvel animated movies. My dad would go to Walmart every month and buy them, whether it was the Iron Man animated movie, there was a dope-ass Dr. Strange one, there was a Hulk versus Wolverine animated movie. Now, granted, they were like straight to DVD animated movies.

39:17
But we love,  they had an Ultimates  animated movie too. My thing is always this though, because they never had the platform and they could have put those things on Disney, like regular Disney channel. You don't think they're on Disney Plus? They're on Disney Plus. But I'm saying the people who are introducing their children to this stuff are introducing their kids to this stuff  on Warner Brothers, on HBO Max, because they're starting with um

39:47
the Bruce Tim universe. If you're going to be like the complete  parent or something. Speaking of which, mean, the Batman just recently had a relaunch  at the Cape Crusader. Yep. Yeah. You start near and then you, just marvelous. Stopped investing in those DC kept it going. see. That's all I'm saying. Okay. So, and that also has an effect on getting new readers to the actual books because you try to sell the kids.

40:15
It's like wrestling. It's the same thing with wrestling. As much as they be like, like, ViscenMand was right in this regard was that we can't just be out here just, just wild and flagrant. If we are just wild and flagrant, we're going to miss a whole generation of children. And I need kids to watch this so kids can become adults and continue to watch this. And that's all I'm saying.

40:42
And that's what has happened with manga and anime is those kids are watching that stuff from the time they're like four or five. They're watching like, um,  I mean, don't know. Um,  just, you guys in no, no Ruto. I'm just using a Ruto. That's their gateway drugs. I mean, it makes me think about my nephew who my sister has also gotten into manga  and they go watch.

41:05
all of the ones that show up in the theater, the Jujutsu Kaisen movies, the Demon Slayer movies. I have not seen the Demon Slayer movie, but I just finished the series. I finished the what was on the anime. And I was like, bro, I'm not about to wait all these years to watch this. I got Country Row or whatever, not Country Row. No, you're right, Country I got Country Row, man. I just opened that thing up and just read. That's what I read. You start to read these.

41:34
I just sat back one day and just read the rest of Demon Slayer last Sunday. So you're the problem. I'm part of the problem. I'm not that big of a problem. Guess what? you're a fat stack. You say I'm not 12 or 13. Yeah. OK. Another on the same idea of like how to leverage digital comics. I had another idea I wrote down. I wrote imagine a digital comic line or feature.

42:01
that allowed you to choose a choice or path, a la choose your own adventure that also combined small animation and special effects and interactions within the digital comics. Dog, that is a, I ain't gonna say that's a bridge too far, but that is a lot. It's a great idea, right? It's not a bad idea, but you asking people to code and- You asking people to do a lot. Do a lot of invest, but I think that's how digital- I see what you saying, but-

42:30
They gotta get people to just read these things first. Yeah, I guess you're right. You gotta get them into the basic part of it. You actually do a whole, you can't get people to regularly read Choose Your Own Adventure books. That was a bridge you bought when I was a kid, like choose your own adventure What? Well, I used to beg my dad to take me to the library every other day. So you could choose your own adventure book. To go grab another Choose Your Own Adventure And I tell you, I read every single Choose Your Own Adventure book at the Jacksonville Public Library on West Connet.

42:59
Insane.  Look, my signature is somewhere in those books.  But I think there's an opportunity there. don't think you're wrong. I'm just saying that you got to get people you you got to get people used to reading those forms of books before you start adding a little bit of extra stank to the books. OK. Like I said, this is just my list of random ideas. mean, look, we just shoot the shit when I think about how I can save the comic book industry single handedly. don't think I think the biggest issue with the comic book industry more than anything else is that

43:31
you need to be in more places than just a regular comic book shop.  if nothing else, and this is where, again, this is where James Gunn is like, it's like, yeah, I'm seeing what they're doing wrong  over at the other house.  And nah, bro, these books need to just be available and everywhere. there's a reason why kids read Archie books. They're at the front line of the grocery store. You mean to tell me you can't put a Superman book there?

44:01
I think it's only a matter of time before we see those compact comics there. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Speaking of which, I'm low key kind of curious about this Archie revamp again. I read the last Archie revamp. With Mark Wade and Fiona Staples? No, yeah, I read that one, but I read that until naturally ended because Fiona Staples had to go back to her real job, which is making Saga. Wait, are you telling me there's a Archie? There's a new Archie revamp coming up this year. Archie is going to be moving to, they're going to be still doing stuff in conjunction, but

44:31
They're coming out through only press. Yes. And it looks like this year, September 2026, writer Maxwell Prince and Fabio Moon. There's going to a Nick Kagnetti. Everybody named mom is going to be over there writing different Archie books. That's kind of Yeah. Well, how do you keep up with um with new releases? Because I I use League of Comic Geeks website and the app. I go over there to just kind of like see what's coming out that week. I still go to Bleeding Cool. uh interesting. And that leading cool man.

45:00
Loyals at the end. I'm loyal, but I'm loyal because I ain't about to be out here looking for a bunch of sites. Okay. Cause at this point, I'm like, when I'm at my work desk, I'm typically like looking at the news and sports. Like the light, I'll just go check Bleeding Cool to kind of keep up on to see what's going on. But I don't be keeping up on new, new releases like that. Now, if it's a book that I like rock with, then I'll jump on it. So like that, like.

45:29
what should have been in his sack was criminal. And he forgot to put this criminal in there. The Christmas special that came out in December? Yeah. Did you know not only did a Christmas special come out in December, but Brubaker and Sean Phillips also put out another graphic novel. It's called Knives Out. I got it in the back. My man. I haven't read it yet. I picked up both of those. Hold on. Give me two seconds. me go make sure we talk about the same thing. Yeah. I'll fill a bus. Matter of fact, I'll ahead and call this special guest right quick.

45:58
Short Box Nation, I'm trying to give Drew a call, see if we can't get the trifecta joined. Uh oh, uh oh. We got a list off, ladies and gents. Mr. Torres, you're live on the Short Box Podcast.  What's up, what's up, what's up? How's it going? Yo, what up, buddy? How you doing, man? How you doing? Look who I got.  Yo, look who I got with me. Yo, what up, fool? Yo, what's good, what's good? I had to walk back in the back real quick to go grab something.

46:28
Is this the book you talking about, right? That is the book I'm talking about. OK, cool. Drew, you got five minutes. I don't want to hold you up. Yeah, I got five minutes. OK, OK. We're talking about um Criminal and how it's returned this year. uh They put out the Christmas,  a special like Christmas issue in December and this new graphic novel um called Knives Out. Or the Knives. The Knives, sorry. Knives Out is that movie. Knives Out is the movie. That I to also watch. Did you watch the third movie, of Knives Out? Yeah, yeah.

46:57
I haven't watched it. You watch it yet. Yeah, I watched it. Did you watch it bother? I have not watched it. OK, I am woefully behind on this thing. Guess what? I will. I will watch it in a week. I got to catch up. Damn, you know what's missing, Drew? Not only are you missed today, um looks like I'll have to take up the mantle of sleeping on the couch on Walt's couch and reading his comics and watching his movies. uh You treat it like it's a camp.

47:27
I'm I'm on a camp, I'm going to war camp. yo, this is awesome. Drew, real quick, do you want to champion anything while we have you on the phone? Any comic or movie or anything? Oh, man.

47:45
Stop.

47:47
Eric Larson Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the second volume. And that thing feels like  a Frank Miller comic book. That's funny you talk. It's funny you bring up Eric Larson. Me and Waltwood just had a conversation about the original set of  the founders of image and who's doing the best. I mean, the fact that all of them are still  active, uh doing what they do. Eric Larson being a prime example of someone that's still doing Savage Dragon.

48:14
And then, know, someone like Todd McFarlane, who's obviously uh killing it in business and Jim Lee. So  that's interesting. Bring up Eric Larson. I'm so sorry. I meant Jim Lawson. uh You know what? It's funny you say all that because I like I looked at my phone real quick. was like, hold on. Eric Larson did some TMNT. I had to go check the score. He did. You know, Jim Lee also did some TMNT.

48:42
Jimmy do a lot of dope shit. Real quick, Drew, uh on the topic of Jim Lee and TMNT, have you ever read the Jim Lee TMNT series? Yeah. How is it? I when those toys came out, I got the comic books to go with them. Well, who's your favorite? Real quick, Drew, who do you think is Walt's favorite turtle? Before he answers. Donatello. Well, who's your favorite turtle? Donatello, good call.  Why is he your favorite turtle? I mean, from when a kid, I mean, the purple was a regal color.

49:16
That is the most  wall answer. It's straightforward, simple, and you didn't expect it. That's great. that was the, you know what also RBS aside, was the first show that my mom bought me. When that was like the hot toy, ah she bought us, she bought me that toy. You know what? Well, I I can bring this topic up. Me and Drew recorded a bonus episode on Patreon. I see I need to listen to it.  And the topic, we were talking about the Doomsday trailer. First question, have you watched the Avengers Doomsday I've watched three of them.

49:45
The three teasers. So I watched the one with X-Men. All right. You've watched X-Men one, the Chris Evans and the Chris Hemsworth, the Thor one. Yeah. Which one your favorite? Actually, the X-Men one was just kind of like insane. Expected. I forgot that Thor had a baby, had the kid and then I was like, yeah, he did have a random child at end of the story. Yeah. He kind of, yeah, it was like an adopted baby. He adopted a baby. Yeah, yeah. It's like Lone Wolf and Cub, but with, you know, God's Under. Is it like Lone Wolf and Cub, really?

50:13
Not exactly at all. you know, I... Is it though? I'm gonna call it Is it? But I will say I think the Thor trailer is my Damn, I just realized that. I'm so sorry. I just realized that Thor is pulling an Odin where he's getting a... Okay, so... Oh, that's a good...

50:35
Yeah, he just has a random kid there. Yeah. Well, he's saying that Odin much like how he adopted Loki. Yeah. Thor is adopting this kid from this vile. uh I got you. got you. Anyway, I guess fast forward. The other question I had  is Cyclops at the end of that X-Men doomsday trailer. There's that epic scene where he's got the visor off. He's doing the full optic blast. Stubs  his toe. Yeah. Drew said he must have stubbed his toe and that's him uh screaming in pain, which I think is funny. But it reminded me.

51:05
how much I fuck with Cyclops.  And my wife, Blythe, does not fuck with Cyclops. She thinks he's kind of corny. Everyone thinks he's corny until you those X-Men books. You're damn right. Well, you know who won't read a comic book? Mrs. Milligan. But that's not here nor there.  What I'm saying is... Hey, all you need to... I tell you, put it like this. This is how you can sell people on Cyclops, honestly. Okay, okay. Is in, what is that?  What is it? House of X or powers of X? Whichever one...

51:35
Is when  um an issue Mystique told and saber tooth go to rob some shit And then they catch saber tooth the fantastic four catch saber tooth and then side talk cyclops walks in the room. He walks in like hey That I just says everything that you need to say that's all polite And then he turns around and then she asked him why did y'all become separate? He's like yo

52:02
Then he tells her like, you think we would just let the world beat us down forever? And then he turned around and said, yo, tell your son when he's ready, he has family waiting for him. And that's it. So he was he was dope there. He was dope when  Professor X, Cyclops in the last 15 years, he's had a lot of great money in the last 15 years, they have completely rehabilitated  rehabilitated him from being like this fake ass Boy Scout. If you look up the word.

52:28
glow up in the dictionary, Cyclops is right there. He's one of them glow up. Because Drew brought up a great point about the uh Josh Whedon and the astonishing X-Men role, which I think to me, I think you could kind of trace. It started there. Yeah, it starts there. But I bring that up all the same. Me and her got into a fun little argument.  And uh Life  was like, you know what? I want to see the Venn diagram between, and this is me tying it all back to TMNT. She's like, I want to see the Venn diagram between Cyclops fans and Leonardo fans.

52:56
And while I think she was talking about me, that is me in the center of that Venn diagram. Leonardo was pretty dope though. have so Leonardo got hold of it. Now he got a whole ass katana. Bro. He's got two of them. Not one, but two of them. Also, the other thing is this. These are all people who know Ninja Turtles from those cartoons. Yeah. The eighties. And the Ninja Turtles are not, they became what they became.

53:23
But if you read the original text of the Ninja Turtles, it is not that type of shit. uh Wait,  can we start referring to the original Mirage TMNT comics as the text? The original text. The original text of the Ninja Turtles is not here for no pussy shit.  All them dudes is about that action. Do you read any? Have you ever read any TMNT comics? I mean, just a little bit, but I mean, this is more of like  some glossing around type shit.  Drew, if you had to recommend  to Walt some TMNT comics.

53:53
to make him a fan or it may be specifically Donatello stories. Is there any that come to mind for you? Can you do that for us? Honestly, this Jason Aaron Chris Burnham one is pretty good.  This one is going on right now? Yeah, you're a Jason Aaron fan. I do like Jason Aaron, but I've been out on him every since he made that bad Avengers run or that mid Avengers run. Cause the ending wasn't as bad as they wanted to set it to be. The ending was fine. But there was a lot of mid in that middle.  Well, I'll say this. I think this team NT run will  revitalize.

54:22
Your fandom. Isn't he writing a super what he writes in my phone. He's writing absolute Superman Well, I think it's kind of crazy that you haven't died Have you dived into any of the absolute stuff? I dove into the first three to four issues of watching my car of Batman and Wonder Woman. Okay, so I need to go back Oh and I was reading them at first and it became a I was getting irk when I be trying to read it in my bed and have to enlarge the page turn the fucking page

54:49
I don't like  the way that they set that thing up on the iPad. This is my only issue with that. Everything else is fine. Because I was going back and reading like those Green Lantern books and a bunch of other shit. I was like on the app for little bit and one day I was just like,  I was reading that, um the Justice League Unlimited, basically that Justice League Unlimited book that's part of all it. I think you should give the Al Lettson written Mr. Terrific comic year one.

55:14
a read, because I think he would really- Okay, yeah, because Al Lesson's your man. Al Lesson is my man, but he's also a talented ass writer. Okay, so I will fuck with that Mr. And much like Mr. Terrific, he's a good looking black dude that makes a leather jacket look good. So he's right in his life. Leather jackets is a strong move, bro. All right, Drew, I'll let you go, but do you have any parting words for the listeners? Thanks for picking up, by the way. Special cameo by Drew. No, no, absolutely. I'm just like, nah, like, yo, me and

55:44
Tell Shaggy I hope the Lakers fail today.

55:51
What up, dawg? Hey, I hope the Lakers suck today, I mean,  it's the Lakers,  Oh, are you, wait a are you a Lakers fan or are a Kobe fan?

56:06
Yeah, Shaggy notoriously loves all the shitty teams in sports. Well, he's gotta know that nicks aren't shitty right now. Wait a minute. I thought you was a co- I thought you was a Laker fan because you was a Kobe fan.

56:18
You are just a member of Kobe sign

56:27
I swear to God, Jackie never ceases to me. He's like, hey, you know what? We will talk soon because  I have a hot Tim Duncan take but that's a whole nother. It's a good take  I'll tell you what I will say this take real fast. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on

56:50
Before you oh before you go I will say this put them back right there Tim Duncan is Worst-case scenario the sixth greatest player of all time  Full stop Full stop that dude was on that dude won five. Did he win five championships in San Antonio? Yeah, he won five championships in San Antonio never bitched Never did nothing

57:20
He just won Yep, the two years he didn't play they didn't make the playoffs. He just won. That was it So he's not worst case scenario number six. Yep. He was good like clockwork and I got another crazy story about Tim Duncan Look, uh-uh. No, no, no Shaggy. You're not gonna come on the pod. I'll over I would say one more thing about Tim Duncan oh Tim Duncan when I lived in st. Thomas cuz I lived in st. Thomas for a little bit, right? Okay

57:49
His best friend was like my dorm mate. Oh That's crazy. So one day I was just bullshit at the crib like turn on like you're going to my TV channels and I was like man It looked just like machete. All right. Well, I think that's everything I got. Is there anything that you're looking forward to this year, whether it be in comic books or movies? I want to see what this Yves Yuen X-Men book is about. I'm going to tap in with that. As far as movies are concerned right now, I hadn't listened to my own movie podcast yet. So I'm not 100 % sure everything is coming out. What's your movie podcast of choice? Big Picture. Big Picture with Van Latham. No, that's Sean Finacy.

Okay. It's finished seeing Dobbins, but Van Leighton will pop up on there. So as far as movies that I'm slightly curious about right now, coming up, I kind of want to see the testimony of Anne Lee. Cause I've never heard of the shakers movement, whichever weird religion that is. But know, America is good for a  a weird fake religion. A hundred percent. So, um. Subscribe to botterism. Yeah.  Real spit.  Walterism too. Shit, why you at it?

So  it really felt like a short box OG episode. But that's everything I got for you. Obviously a new year, new pod, new interviews, new guests.  Stay tuned for everything I got going on and thank you for supporting the show. I look forward to bringing great comic book content to those ear holes of yours.
