Does Lanterns Feel Like Green Lantern? Lanterns Review, Plus Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, and Comic Reviews (Unlocked Patreon Episode)
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Originally recorded on 8/26/26 for Patreon, Drew and Badr don’t exactly see eye-to-eye on DC’s Lanterns show. After watching the first two episodes, Drew is already sold, while Badr wonders if the Green Lantern series has gone a little too far in the True Detective direction. Then it’s over to Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, the new Marvel fighting game that unexpectedly won us over. Plus: remembering Dolly Parton, revisiting Big Hero 6, and plenty of comic book recommendations and reviews, including Peter David's Incredible Hulk, Radiant Black, Cable: Love and Chrome, The Authority, Clobberin Time, Rook: Exodus
This episode originally premiered as a Patreon bonus episode. If you enjoy the looser, anything-goes side of the Podcast, check out the latest bonus episode on patreon.com/theshortbox

Short Box Nation, hello again. Welcome back. Thanks for pressing play today. If you're brand new, welcome to the show. I'm your host, Badr, and this is the Short Box Podcast, the comic book talk show where we bridge the gap between the panels of your favorite comics with the people who put their blood, sweat, and tears into making them. This is a special Patreon unlocked episode, meaning that it was once a Patreon exclusive bonus episode that I am now dropping on the main feed for everyone to enjoy. If you're brand new, this might be come across new to you, but I do a spin-off podcast with my homeboy Drew over on the Patreon. It's called SFP, which stands for Save for Podcast, or in some cases we call it Special Friday Podcast. If we record on Friday, we've been doing these episodes for a while now. I think this is like episode 43 of that series or something. But anyways, I do want to preface it in saying that it is not like the regular episodes you listen on the main feed where it's more interview-based. I'm talking of a comic creator, it's very focused on one thing. This is where I get to kick my feet up and just have a good time. Me and Drew talk about everything under the sun and nothing at all at the same time. All right, we aren't Shakespeare. It is just a good time. We have a lot of laughs over some silly stuff. And I want to share some of those laughs with you. So in this particular episode, uh, which was recorded a month ago, we got to talking about the first two episodes of Lanterns, which I'm gonna go ahead and give a disclaimer. I had some strong feelings about the first two episodes, which you'll hear. I I am a little embarrassed by how strong I went at these first two episodes, but nonetheless, you'll be hearing that soon. We also talked about Marvel Token Fighting Souls. Um Dolly Parton had just like recently passed, rest in peace at Dolly Parton. So we got to talk about Dolly Parton of all things. Like I said, SFP is where we go down the most random of tangents and rabbit holes. So if you want a little break from the interviews, I think you'll enjoy this. And then then we also talk about the comic books that we're reading. We always dive into what we're currently reading, and that can be a lot of fun to hear what Drew's reading versus what I'm reading. So, anyways, yeah, uh a lot of different topics in this one. I hope you guys enjoy it. If you really, really like it, if you're like, man, I like hearing this side of Botter and him just talking his shit. I implore you then become a Patroni Homie at patreon.com slash the short box. I also have a link to that in the show notes for less than five bucks a month, which once again is cheaper than a single comic book nowadays. You get a lot of cool perks and rewards. I mean, you get to listen to uh all the bonus episodes we drop, uh, you get early access to stuff. And most importantly, like I always say, you get to be immortalized in short box history with a shout out by name at the end of every episode. Once again, that's patreon.com slash the short box. If you enjoyed this episode, come hang out with us over on the Patreon. Uh and yeah, I'm don't really got much more to say in this intro other than it's going to be a wild ride. Please don't hate me for anything I said about lanterns, okay? Especially the first two episodes. We actually recently just recorded an episode talking about the later episodes. Uh so if you're curious to hear how my thoughts have changed since, check that out. But enjoy this one and uh come back next week. I'll be back to the regularly scheduled program. I got another interview dropping next Wednesday. Uh, but yeah, take care of yourselves, read a good comic book, and make mine short box, right? Enjoy. Peace. Happy Pod Day.
DrewBro, it is National Pod Day. When is the National Pod Day?
Badr MilliganI think it's in September. Now that you mention it, uh National Podcast Day is International Podcast Day celebrated annually on September 30th. Started in 2014. Okay. So we're a little early to celebrate uh International Podcast Day, but we can celebrate a few things today. Okay, first and foremost, we can celebrate uh new comic book day. Take a sip for that. Cheers, Chink. We can celebrate that we're doing a new uh we're recording a new SFP Safer Pod for the for the patronies. Cheers to that. And last but not least, we're gonna get fucked up before we even get started. And last but not least, we gotta go in and celebrate in cheers. The fact that my boy walked into a job interview, left that job interview with the job. There we go. Congrats, man. You make it look easy. You you make these job interviews and everything just look fucking easy.
DrewIt's like you always get the job, but then there's just like I'm like, I don't want the job.
Badr MilliganSomething happened. Yeah, something happened.
DrewYeah, something guys are like, I don't want this job.
Badr MilliganI still think that's pretty cool. Um thanks, man. And uh, so I guess fuck it. Let's just go ahead and jump right into it, man. I I look, the patronis know what the deal is. It's a brand new episode of SFP, baby. Do you know what episode number is? It's a cipher.
DrewIt's a cipher, bro. It's a comic book cipher.
Badr MilliganYes, it is. Uh, I'm not gonna rap. I might do the beatboxing, but I ain't gonna rap. Uh Patronis, yo, welcome to another episode of your favorite spinoff podcast, SFP Safer Pod. Uh, today's not a special Friday pod because we're recording on new comic book day, like I said in the beginning. But regardless, we're gonna have a good fucking time. Thank you for hanging out with us. Thank you for being a Patroni. As you can imagine, I ain't doing this episode solo because I'm doing it with my man Andrew Torres. He's got a new job, and he's feeling like this. Did you hear that? Damn, I was really proud of it.
SFXSuper yagging fleep.
DrewThe Japanese version of Super Saiyan is way harder than this.
Badr MilliganIt sounds sexy. I don't know why it sounds sexy. It's like Supa Seiya Jinger, I'll take your panties off. Three. Can we hear that one more time? Because I'm real proud of cutting this. Is that Goku or Vegeta? Goku. I had to search for um, and I'm not gonna lie, my search left much to be desired. I typed in like Japanese version of Dragon Ball Z where they say Super Saiyan. Of course, I got everything. The main hit I kept getting was the first time Goku transforms to Super Saiyan, the Japanese episode. He doesn't say Super Saiyan. So I was like, well, let me try the first time he turns to Super Saiyan 3. It's like every time Goku's transformed to Super Saiyan, it's been a moment, bro. Oh, really? I don't know when's the last time you watched the scene where Goku transforms to Super Saiyan 3 in the Boo saga. I'm telling you right now, it's been a minute. It's been a minute. It was on some Akira shit. It was like very mad. I forgot, like, there's a scene where he's like, and he's screaming for like two minutes straight. Like, no lie. This video is like two minutes straight of him just powering up screaming. His hair is going crazy. There's lightning flashes. Like Boo and Bobity are both like in shock. And um, Master Roshi. Which version of Boo is it? Fat Boo. And Master Roshi is sensing the power, and so is King Kai. And they're all like, What the fuck is Goku doing right now? And then he turns Super Saiyan 3, and there's a moment where like it gets, like I said, real meta. You go inside of Goku's eye, and then it turns all black, and then it's like Goku naked for some reason, floating in mid-air. What? With his tail, he's an adult naked, his tail, and then all of a sudden he transforms to like the monkey form, and then it zooms back out, and it's like, yeah, I'm like, what the fuck? This is like some Akira shit.
DrewI have to watch this. I don't think I've ever seen it on uh yeah.
Badr MilliganSo watching it in Japanese was even doper. I will say the Japanese versions, uh uh the original Japanese versions of Dragon Ball Z episodes. I love the sound, the soundtrack, the score, like that real like it's not quite jazz, but it's no, it is jazz, bro.
DrewI swear it's western jazz, it's western jazz, yeah, yeah.
Badr MilliganBro, dude, as soon as I said it, you know what I'm saying? Like it's real battle ready music. It's like yeah, I'm a whoops.
DrewYeah, let's be those dudes. I bet you you know who probably knows anything about it? Uh who's the dude from the roots that's like you like Questlove, can you tell me? He'd be like, bro, yeah, I got the original reels.
Badr MilliganHe'd be like, I got the original reels.
DrewHave they ever done like a Dragon Ball Z um music, like musical concert? That'd be dope. Oh, yeah, you know not musical, but like the concerts. Like, you know how they do the Final Fantasies in Jurassic Parks? Can you imagine if they did like fucking the top top 20 anime fights?
Badr MilliganCan I ever tell you that one of the first dates me and Blife went on? I took her to go see um we went to go to the Veterans or the Jacksville Amphitheater, one of those. And it was a live orchestra playing with it. Was it the Lord of the Rings or Harry Floyd? No, no, no, no, no, no. Uh what is the Harrison Floor movie? Why am I drawing a blank on her favorite Harrison? Indiana Jones. Thank you so much. I'm embarrassed I forgot that. But I think it was I think it was Indiana Jones or Lord of the Rings. I wish you would bust me through the door. I heard everything. But I just smacked her over the head like my mom. Dumbass. Oh, but anyways, I bring that up because you brought it up, and then that reminded me of that. And then I just seen a an ad that they're doing that again, live orchestra, and they're playing uh Blade Runner, the original Blade Runner.
DrewThe Harrison Ford just picks really good movies with orchestra and scores. For real. He's just like, yo, I think he's in cahoots with John Williams. Not John Williams or whatever the fuck is. What would be a fun one that you would want to see? Like, uh, like no shit. Doesn't have to be an orchestra, but you would no shit would love a live soundtrack perform behind.
Badr MilliganWow, damn, you put me on the spot. What we can come back to it later. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let me I yes, I will come back to this when I actually have time to think. What are some of my favorite scores?
DrewI would want Dexter's Laboratory.
Badr MilliganWhy?
DrewI would love to hear that Go family, Dexter Go when they're he's in the robot, and then there's like that guitar rip.
Badr MilliganOh, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's a good episode.
DrewAnd then like any of the monkey episodes would probably be good. Yeah.
Badr MilliganYou know what? I want to see I want to see Will I Am backed by a 20-piece orchestra playing the theme song to Samurai Jack. Samurai Jack. Back to that past.
DrewWow, why? Actually, that would probably be like actually a lot of the the fight scenes are like I was just transformed to Cartoon Network. Jeez holy.
Badr MilliganAll right, Drew. Uh, like we normally do with these episodes. Let's start. First of all, do you know what episode number we're on?
DrewNot a clue.
Badr MilliganWe're on we're on 40. We're on episode 43. Dude, pretty soon we're gonna be celebrating a 50 episode milestone of a spin-off show we never intended about.
DrewThe same creator content, like the same creative team we haven't left.
Badr MilliganNo, I did not expect this spin-off to go so you know how many spin-off shows. I mean, I think of like pilot slicense, I mean, all of these extra things that we've done that have never gone past like 20 episodes, and here we are. Yeah. Our little baby, like our little, our little baby, this low stakes conversation between you and me. Yeah, going on 50 years old, baby. Come on. I'm proud of that right there. I mean, goddamn, won't podcast do it?
DrewHave you heard of these podcasts? Where's that from?
Badr MilliganFamily Guy. That was Lois.
DrewOh have you heard of these podcasts? What was the latest episode of does that still go on? Is Family Guy still around?
Badr MilliganBro, if Simpsons can still go on, I think Family Guy is still probably going on.
DrewOkay, do you wish these would end? Or are you glad that they're still?
Badr MilliganNo, because I'm not watching them, so it doesn't matter. If they're you know what I'm saying, it's like if someone out there is enjoying it enough to where they will still air it, more power to I'm not gonna watch it.
DrewHere's the thing we won't outlive Simpsons by no means because it's gonna be there forever. But do you think you will outlive do you think they'll outlive their season? What do you mean by outlive their season? Like, I'm sorry, not season, their their run.
Badr MilliganI think there's plenty of people that would tell you that they have they've outlived their um relevance and humor.
DrewNo, no, no, not outlive their relevance. Like, do you think Simpsons will still be going on and you'll still be alive? Or do you think that Simpsons will end and you'll still be alive?
Badr MilliganOkay, so you're saying who who ends first, me or the Simpsons? Yeah, yeah, who ends first? I think there's probably a couple of people that have lost that bet already. Um, so I'm not betting against this, I'm not betting against Fox. All right, that's what I'm saying. I'm not betting against Fox Network, Matt Granny. I'm not betting against Homer Simpson, all right? Not at all. I think I think I'll probably be dead. There'll probably be airing a uh a Halloween special the day I die.
DrewBecause there's like if if you know, heaven forbid, like honestly, this week has been a celebrity death-filled wick where they're just taking people. So nobody's safe. Like, nobody's safe. So, like, if any of the main Simpsons characters were taken, like I'm trying to see uh who died this week.
Badr MilliganAll right, obviously, uh, we're recording on for anyone that that wants a timestamp, we're recording this episode on Wednesday, August 26th, August 26th, which happens to be really quick. You know, we're gonna talk about all these deaths, but uh, I want to celebrate life. Today is actually Greg's uh birthday. Greg Parrish, our man KLA, KLA Alan Fresh. I didn't get the group text message. Uh you should go ahead and text him. He'd I think he'd really appreciate it. Okay, so obviously Dolly Parton has passed away. She passed away yesterday. Tim Curry passed away today. Um, and then it says Hayden Peneteri passed away earlier in the month of August, earlier this month on August 16th. Oh my god, she was known for standard roles in the TV series Heroes and Nashville. She's heroes as well as Heroes. Can I tell you I've never watched Heroes? Really? No, I've never watched Heroes. But did it ever like fall on your leader? My mom and dad watched it every single week. This was like during the the it was that period of like I was not watching TV. Yes, yes, actually, yes, because I would work. Yeah, I was like starting to work and then also high school. I just wasn't interested in, especially if my parents were into it. I'm like, I'm not interested in I read comics, I don't need to watch this bullshit of it.
DrewYeah, I don't need this high brow shit.
Badr MilliganNo, I kind of do. I I mean, you know, obviously I live through it.
DrewDo you know which comic book creator Jeff Loeb? Right? Okay, do you know what second combo creator is tied to this? Who else is tied?
Badr MilliganJeff Loeb. Alright, I'm I I'm just gonna shoot a wild guess. Mark Millar. Maybe I don't know.
DrewUh Tim Sale. Oh Tim Sale, because a lot of people like that yo, you would have been the ballpark. If it was a bullseye, you would have hit the 20. Oh, I'll take it. For sure, for sure. I'll take a 20. Yeah. But um, for Tim Sale, all of his artwork was throughout season.
Badr MilliganOh, that's cool. Isn't that the only good season, though? Right? Don't people say like because the writer strike had happened like uh in the middle of season two or something? Like it it just it definitely shows the quality.
DrewI guarantee you no more writer strikes are gonna happen because they got them robots in the back, which is basically like what would he have said that you're like the idea. We got robots right here with on the topic of death.
Badr MilliganUm I'm sorry for making this work. I don't know, I wasn't gonna bring this up because I was like, why would I even bring this up? There's no reason for me to bring this up on a comic podcast, my best friend. But since on the topic, first of all, let's take a step back. Okay, uh let's take a step back. Dolly Parton yesterday. That one definitely was like, oh shit, Dolly Parton. Can I say last night me and Blythe watched an ABC special? They premiered like this ABC Dolly Parton special, and we both she pointed it out actually. She was like, How do they have this up already? Like, how do they have and dude? It was like an hour-long special talking about Dolly Parton's life, uh, clips and interviews, and it's like they either had it 90% of the way ready to go, like hey, in case she passes the way, we got like the temple.
DrewYeah, yeah, I feel like they got him for all the people like your celebrity and you reach after 75. They got one on Harrison Ford, they got one on Joe Biden, they got one, bro. They got it on everybody. Yeah, just like if you're good enough to like be featured.
Badr MilliganThat special, though, I will say, made us both teary-eyed. It was like a really sweet, sentimental special, and yeah, she seems like a very wonderful person. She's like an angel.
DrewI didn't know, bro. I don't know her personally, but for like I was just like, damn, she's one of she's like she looked like a real one. My mom loves Dolly Parton.
Badr MilliganBro, everyone loves Dolly Parton, especially brown households. It's like, yeah, Dolly Parton got the pass.
DrewI'm not gonna lie, black black Twitter was my like when Dolly Parton died, all the black Twitter like memes that came out that has they said, oh low, they took Dolly Parton, dude. I wonderful.
Badr MilliganYeah, no, Dolly Parton was it. Okay, but anyways, why I brought up, you know, why I why I brought this up. I went to the um Jags preseason game last week with life. It was the first preseason which those preseason game did y'all play? I hate the fact that you said who did y'all play? All right, who did we play? We're uh the dude. I stepped all over there. Can you do that again? Where did you just say turning the bronze?
DrewI keep looking at blue and orange, like shut the fuck up.
Badr MilliganI swear to God, if you come to Jack's wearing blue and orange and anything but jack.
DrewOh, you're like, I'm not a goth, like yo, but like here, I dress like a goth kid, but I just do blue and orange. Like it's blue and orange nails, blue.
Badr MilliganI hate that you said that I really hate that you said that. Okay, but we went to the preseason game, which I won't lie. It was just something to do uh for a Friday night. You know, I not none of us, you know, we I went with wife, her crew, her dad, and stuff. None of us really cared about the game. We just wanted to go see we just wanted to go see what the stadium looked like. You know, it's under construction. Uh oh. So it was like, it's like, man, this is some small town shit. It's like, let's go she with the stadium.
DrewLike, let's look at it and complain. Let's look at some of the concrete poor.
Badr MilliganLike, how dare they get rid of the shade? Black seats, are they dumb? Some of the decisions are pretty dumb, I will say. In true Duval fashion, some dumbass decisions. But well, who designed it? Fuck fine, I don't care, but it got reasoning. I got a question about that as well. So I probably can't rub a sports. But but here's what I'll say we walk down our normal path to the stadium, and along that path, yeah, there's just no way around it. You're gonna you're gonna hit Jazz Man, and you know who I'm talking about, Duval Legend, Jazz Man, Saxophone Man, the guy that plays the saxophone underneath the bridge at Enjoy the show! Thank you so much, that guy.
DrewYeah, and it got me thinking, I'm like if he learned, if he learned Kendrick Lamar, bro, it's like I swear to God.
Badr MilliganThey wrote an article about him a while back about like who he is, like what he does, and and you know, him being such an integral part of the game and all that stuff. I always wonder if you can, you know, because he has got that hat for tipping. I'm always wondering if he takes requests. I would love to be like, can you play Dr. Dre next episode? Bing, bing, bing, bing, bing. But it got me thinking, I'm like, man, I would love to have the most Duval ever funeral. And I think that would include having Jazz Man play at my funeral. And then I want my casket to be carried by a few Duval icons. I want Jackson Deville to carry my casket. I want, I want little Duval to also carry my casket. If we get Trevor Lawrence to also carry the casket, that'd be great. Damn it, I had one other guy, and I can't remember who's gonna be my other casket. I think you need six people to carry, like carry it. I know. All right, so I'm I'm like halfway there. Um I'm gonna think about some more, but I think that's a solid start.
DrewThat is a solid start. That's a good that's a good starter.
Badr MilliganJazz man playing the the procession or the reception, whatever it is. Come on, little doval is there. Very much uh. That's all I want. Okay, so that is our you know, uh, which gets us into our our life updates that we always share at the beginning of these episodes. Three life updates that are not related to comics or anything.
DrewOh, I do have a question though before we go to that. Okay, good. Interrupt in the sense of okay, so because of the fact that I mean it is a sports household, as far as sports investigative journalism goes, like how do you guys feel about that?
Badr MilliganWe like investigative journalism over here.
DrewOkay, but do you are you guys like really into like the whole NBA scandal that's going on with Kawhi Leonard or like any of the stuff where it comes up like No, I I don't think we dig that deep.
Badr MilliganI mean, if it's on ESPN and I've got it on, you'll watch it. We watch a few, like two primary YouTube channels that do a lot of like video essays about sports and and relevant topics. Uh, one is called This Is Not a Sports Show or Another Sports Show. Then I forgot this new one that she found. That guy's really good. Um, so no, we don't follow, I guess, a lot of it like that, but we do watch like video random topics. But um okay. All right, life updates. Three of them for me. Okay, one uh went to the Jags preseason game. Jag season is right around the corner, which means my Sunday obliterated, baby. I only live six days a week, and I give the seventh to our Lord and Savior, Trevor Lawrence. Uh, what's the other life update? Damn, I had these life updates like ready to go. Uh jump in here with me while I think about my life updates. What else you got going on?
DrewUh, first life update is uh and this is a joke for that so funny because You know, Mayor Mondani is doing all the the best right now, killing it for New York, doing a lot of stuff for like programs and stuff. So uh because all of uh my aunts and uncles live in New York, we've been trying to like get my dad interviews for Medicaid and get seen over there so he can get care in New York. Okay. Um and some of the uh interviews that my mom has done has been really good. So uh it looks like it's gonna be pretty good that he's gonna get into like basically the hogwarts of uh uh dementia, which is really nice.
Badr MilliganWhoa, okay. So your dad is I and I I don't know how many people know this on the pod. I guess if you've been listening to this show, you you might know Drew's dad has been battling dementia. They're trying to get him into a nice, a nice someone to take care of the man. Um so it sounds like you guys have found like a good place that'll take care of him.
DrewYeah, yeah. So like all the interviews have gone well, so we just gotta wait for approval. But um then my mom just signed away her guardian rights to Pete, which is my dad's older brother. So as far as that is that is a life update for sure, for sure.
Badr MilliganThat is a huge life update. You guys, super personal. I would okay. Uh okay.
DrewSo that's the first one.
Badr MilliganSecond one. Okay. You go for it. Oh, okay. I will do round robin. Okay. My second life update, which I hate following up after that. I think you set me up, you son of a bitch. Um, I went to Please talk about money and then the fact that you're doing I went to uh uh Little Plates night um this past weekend, one of my favorite events in all of Jack's. It happens every year. They do it at Shandy Town. Oh yeah, they do it at Shandy Town. They invite a bunch of DJs to come and play sets entirely based uh using 45 records, so like the small records and vinyl that you see. They do a whole set, some of the dopest DJs are there, and it's all to um celebrate the life of Peyton Locke. So I was there this past weekend, bro. I the the music I heard was amazing. I got to run into a bunch, like anyone that is anyone in Jack's hip hop scene was there. Willie Evans, Arson Fist, DJ P. Ryan, like Dylan was there from Full Plate. It was dope. Was Megat the Marvelous there? David had to work. Uh David was not there with me.
DrewAll right, man.
Badr MilliganDo you mind if I all right? I have a I have an attachment question to that. Go for it, yeah. What do you remember about Peyton Locke? And I asked this because not only did I go to Little Plates night, but I literally this week I didn't drop a new episode. I dropped what I call a short box classic, so like an oldie from the archives. And I've I guess I've just had Peyton Locke on the mine all all day or all week. And yesterday, August 25th, happened to be his birthday. And some people call it Peyton Locke Day. So I was like, you know what? Let me drop the first interview that we ever did of Peyton Locke, which was in 2016. You were on that episode, and it's one of the very few interview episodes we've ever done together. What do you remember from that recording or meeting Peyton Locke?
DrewWas this one in the shed or was this at the house? The stew. The stew? Damn. It's been long. I don't like I really don't remember any of that episode.
Badr MilliganIt was like it was like a big kind of hip-hop talk episode. But uh, he was also, he's also like, you know, really big into comic books too. So we spent like quiet as fuck listening to y'all talk. I wasn't sure if anything comes to mind, but maybe this photo will trigger some some ideas.
DrewDamn, holy shit. 2016, bro, 10 years ago. Damn, look at those hip-hop variants in the back screen.
Badr MilliganCome on, bro.
DrewDamn, okay, dude. Where's that mustache at, bro? Where's that mustache? Like, look at that, bro. Not the red five panel hat, bro. Oh my god. And that was the the first iteration of the uh gauntlet. Oh my god, bro.
Badr MilliganI know.
DrewI wasn't sure if you remember anything, but uh I've had Peyton Lock. No, I honestly honestly don't. That's crazy. I'm so sorry, bro. No, you're good. You're good. Okay. All right. Well, that was my second layout. You read like you re did a refresh on that?
Badr MilliganYeah, I just cleaned it up and I I put it out. It's been kind of fun. Whenever I run out of episodes, new episodes to drop and stuff, I'll just like pick an old one to re-release and I'll do like a I'll do like a I'll record a new intro and talk about like what I remember if I remember anything. And I happen to, like I said, I just I've had Peyton Lock on the mindset.
DrewSo what do you remember from that episode?
Badr MilliganGoing through it, I didn't listen to the entire thing. I was I'm like, I listened to like 30 yeah listening to old episodes to me are is very difficult. I'm like, shut the fuck up, you dumbass kid. You know, I know that.
DrewLook, he's like, I know that it's one of those things where it's like if you had a time machine, what would you do? I was like, I'd go back and punch myself in the channel. Um so hard, and I would whisper only to where I would hear. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Badr MilliganUh, we definitely, I don't know, you know, like we're 27, so we're not super young, but we're young. I don't know, just look listening back. It's not that we're saying stupid things, it's just like it's just more cringy because you're like, oh God, I really tried to make that joke work, or why am I cussing so much? You're like, golly, even though we cuss a lot now. But he was, I just remember him being a an encyclopedia of hip hop, but then also I uh I loved how he talks about I never wanted to be like Jack's famous, I wanted to be worldwide. He was like, because I just knew Jack's famous didn't mean anything in the grand scheme of things, but he also did he go to Japan? Yes, he traveled the world, man.
DrewOkay, so that was one of the things where we're like, I think we we touched on his Japan talk.
Badr MilliganYeah, yeah. Uh he he talks about like living in Germany for a while and making music and and uh just uh starting different rap groups, and then talks about like uh he was a big like Luke Cage fan, and like we also talked about like black representation in comics and like how he's seen it evolve. Um, it's just I don't know, it was a really good interview, and it's you know, I'm like, damn, I really miss Panga, man. I really miss, I really miss the dude. So that's my second life update. Your turn.
DrewOh, how the fuck am I supposed to follow right now? Yeah, one for one for one. Now you know I feel yeah, I'll put my dick on the table now. Dang, uh damn. Uh life updates? Yeah, give me one. Oh, give me one. Um, actually, yeah. So working currently at the place that I work at, um, it's called Side Pony. It is a cocktail.
Badr MilliganWe've talked about this before. You can always trace your career listening back to all of these prior SFP episodes. Like literally, you can we've had an episode when you left Denver and then when you got your first gig, and then the second, and then yeah.
DrewOkay, okay, okay. Bet. So the they they're always putting together food stuff. So I had talked to Taylor, who's like my boss, and I was like, oh, um, we should do this for like a date idea. Um, and it was hot ones. So to they actually are doing it. So um I'm working at they're doing uh hot ones date night. What does that mean? Like like same premise in the sense of like you come in, it's date night, you're gonna have wings. Y'all make wings? No. We're bringing in uh one of our chefs. Okay, his name's Chef Adonis, he works at the sister company called Pony Up, okay, and they actually have like a full kitchen. So he loves doing anything food stuff. So me and him have hit it off because uh my manager Taylor, she's in a relationship with the head chef. So he's always coming up to Side Pony, and we're always chitting chat and we talk about all these different stuff. And I told him I was like, oh man, if I can do a date night, it would literally be hot ones. You would have wings, make your own sauces, and then like you would ask each other questions, like and then as it you know it goes hotter. So they took that and they ran with it. So they're actually doing a theme, but so they're it is a date night where people are gonna come in, they're gonna have their own wings, but they're interviewing both of the owners um at my job. So they're gonna be like the main people asking questions, but you're allowed to oh that's dope. Oh, that's dope. Look at you.
Badr MilliganHey, listening to my boy's ideas, yeah.
DrewSo I'm pretty excited. So we so far, um, it's a ticketed event, and we've sold 20 tickets so far.
Badr MilliganYo, that's dope.
DrewHell yeah.
Badr MilliganSo, yeah, look at you master. Yeah, if if any babies come out of this, they gotta be named Drew. Anyone hit it off at this event, mouth burning, you know, they gotta mouth on fire. Only way to cool it off is with a smooch, a little wet kiss right there. Next thing you know, nine months later, baby Drew being born. Denver Drew. That's cute. Okay. Um, I think we we skip this. All right, I I'd say we move into our our main topics because we got some shit to talk about. Hello. Where's it along? There's move it along, boys. Thanks, Mom. All right, where do you want to start? Do you want to start lanterns or Marvel Token Fighting Souls? Oh, we can start lanterns. Okay. Because there are only two episodes and there's not much we can talk about. Okay. Spoiler warning on uh if you haven't watched lanterns yet, me and Drew are gonna. We don't have to get like crazy spoilery, but I I would like to at least warn someone. Um, I guess how are you? How do you feel about the show? Two episodes in, almost like two plus hours of of of content that you've watched. How do you feel about the show overall?
DrewI was sold from the trailer. Like I was gonna be a fan since the trailer. Like I'm over here, like they're not gonna be fucking up.
Badr MilliganOkay, okay.
DrewYeah, I have not been disappointed at all. Interesting. I've been saddened, I've been sad, but not disappointed.
Badr MilliganWhat's been your favorite of the two episodes?
DrewOoh, as far as like storytelling or like visual dealer's choice. Probably the first episode. That first episode is just, I mean, they're all getting better, but honestly, that first episode is such a great way to introduce and just like, all right, you're not telling me a lot of stuff, but at the same time, you're giving me information and I'm okay with it.
Badr MilliganOkay, who's your favorite character so far? Which I mean, isn't a ton of them, but between two.
DrewI guess I'm saying like you only have like four characters and stuff.
Badr MilliganBut which one which one so far has really like you know uh the bird, that bird, that bird um like John's construct. Hal Jordan. Kyle Jordan. Okay, Kyle Chandler.
DrewYes, yeah, yeah. Okay, I like I like this version of Hal Jordan. It just feels like, dude, it feels like we're reading a number one.
Badr MilliganOkay, I will give you props and I will co-sign that. It feels this knowing that Tom King is attached to this, and then you got Damon Lindelof, um, and then Chris Mundy, who what has he done? He's done Ozark, true detective, and and Lantern. Okay, he's a writer. Cool. That's a pretty solid crew. Uh, Tom King, Damon Lindelof, Chris Mundy. Knowing Tom King is attached, there are certain scenes and conversations between John and Hal that I'm like, this is such a time, like I could see the Tom King influence, especially when they go about like repeating things and just they rearrange certain words, you know what I'm saying? Like it's almost like some of the dialogue and exchanges. I'm like, oh, this is very Tom King. Like, where it's like yeah, vague, but also they're saying much more than they're letting on. 110%. Drew, if I can be completely honest with you, I have not been that impressed with the show. What? It has not grabbed me yet. And I why and I'm waiting for it to, man. I I don't know. It doesn't feel like what are you expecting from the show? Like, what do you want from a Green Lantern show? Green Lantern. First of all, I want more Green Lantern. I want Okay, I want I don't want to sound like a wet blank, all right? Because it's it's not it's not a terrible show, it's not a bad show. It's just not what I'm I wanted. It's not what I want so far. It's true detective, bro. That's the thing. It almost feels like it almost feels like they're pigeonholing themselves by being too grounded, too true detective-y. My boy wants Michael Bay, bro.
DrewHe wants Michael Bay. There's a little lipples on suits. Like, you mean that? All right, bro. Listen, whatever you want, bro. You're like, yo, I thought this was gonna be a dragon show.
Badr MilliganI wanted jewelry Tupac. I want a little bit of that. I want a little bit of Tupac, all right? I I I I think it's it's like it's too grounded, and I'm like, man, you're dealing with the Green Lanterns, like aliens, other worlds, like the ring. I mean, the ring alone, you know, like I feel like they haven't done anything to show me it's a Green Lantern show. It feels like it is true detective season five, and not a very good true detective just yet, because the mystery hit it.
DrewBut you know he's a cop, right? Like he's a cop. That's what a Green Lantern is. It's a cop. For the entire time I've ever been a Green Lantern writer. To me, it has never been sector 2814. It's always been 2814. Okay. It's always been 2814, it's always been sector 2814.
Badr MilliganWhat's the difference between saying it 2814 versus 281?
DrewIt just rolls off the tongue differently. It really like it just does. Like, I'm just like, you know how like you'll like there's certain things you're like, I don't know how to say this name, I don't know how to say this name, and then you wait for it to like be said.
Badr MilliganYeah, sometimes a live action like it's will um give you context. You're like, oh, that's how it's said, or oh, that's what they mean by it.
DrewIs it Raisha Al Ghoul or Raz Alghoul to you? Like it's one of those. Is it dressed blue or gold?
Badr MilliganLike, I guess damn. So nut like one of the things that really annoyed me in that first episode is um when Hal is interrogating the alien, which was, I think I would say that has been my favorite scene so far. Hal is so unfucking stable and unlikable at times, but it's like, oh, but he has fear. They're leaning all the way into Hal just being like this ego maniac, kind of like that's highball Hal Jordan for you, sir. Put some respect on his nine when he's interrogating the alien, just simple thing. I'm like, why not show him as an alien? They keep talking about aliens, and I haven't seen anything that makes me feel like, oh, we're this mystery goes well beyond the normal human scope. So far, it's been like very kind of like small, and that seeing that the guy worked on Ozark, it's that is a um a comparison I definitely make where it's like, okay, this is like clearly something is off in this town, but they're just not getting to it. They're they're they're saying a lot, but they're not showing me a lot.
DrewYeah, yeah, yeah. But that's like yo, that's like, dude, but that's true detective. That's like how true detective is. Then call it true detective. Where's the green lantern part of shit? But that's not what they're doing. They're doing true detective. I don't want true detective. I want green lantern. That's not my fault. That is because of the fact that what people love that goddamn Yellowstone and fucking Law Man, Longmire, and whatever that oil bullshit show with Billy Bob Thornton. Blame them. Blame that whole fucking like faction because, like, yo, that's how people want it.
Badr MilliganIt almost feels like they're like, hey, we don't want to scare away people by just being, you know, uh yeah, like a space show with aliens and stuff. It's like we're going to keep this super grand, and I think right now, these two episodes so far are alienating me as the comic book fan. Like so, you want this to be more peacemaker?
DrewI I'm not saying you want this peacemaker in your face. I'm not saying be nuts, like fucking nuts in your face.
Badr MilliganI'm not saying it's gotta be uh obtuse or um uh juvenile, but I would like I think there's a balance that you could hit between it being like, hey, this grounded detective. I thought the premise is cool. It's like, oh, they're leaning into the detective cop work of being a green lantern, but right he's training his new partner, and then also Jon Stewart's characterization is an interesting choice. It's like this is young Jon Stewart. Because I think when I what do you think of when you think of Jon Stewart? Because what I'll tell you is I think someone that's got his like is rigid, calculated.
DrewThis one is calculated and rigid, and like, bro, he's patient. He's one of the dude, he's one of those like, bro, ain't nothing gonna shake me. My dad used to fucking use gun practice on me like back in the day. People would get a handshake and a high five. I would get a fucking apple. I think what is nine.
Badr MilliganI think what is interesting is that this is a younger Jon Stewart, and it's like, okay, so he's getting trained by Hal, who at this point is kind of like, I don't know if he's over it, but I think he's like he's he's seen so much shit that he's like, man, it's kind of broken him in a way. So their relationship is pretty interesting, but it sometimes like who's who's your who's your Green Lantern? My Green Lantern, I think it would, I think I'd have to say Jon Stewart. So Jon Stewart is your Green Lantern. Okay, I think I see myself a lot in Jon Stewart, but how Jordan is like, come on, man, that's a close second. That's how Jordan.
DrewVery much so. Like, yo, I've I don't think I've ever read him as reckless as the show predicts him. So now I'm kind of like yeah, he's very reckless. Maybe I've been reading him wrong this entire time. No, I maybe he is one of these, like he's uh an asshole.
Badr MilliganThis is, I mean, to me, uh go back to what you said. This is I'm like, oh, I don't know if John uh Tom King has not written a full no, he has written a Green Lantern story. I mean, he wrote um what was the first series? He wrote the God one. No, Omega something, right? Omega Man, Omega Man, yeah, which might as well have been a Green Lantern story. So he has written a Green Lantern. I do see a lot of Tom King's voice in this series, but I feel like I would almost imagine I I would I I would like to think that they want to go more, but maybe they're working on a limited budget and probably a lot of oversight to hey, really lean into this being uh a true detective vibe. And right now, it just doesn't, you know what I'm saying? I'm like, I like Green Lantern for like outer space, the aliens, the the they could still, I feel like you could do that, but still lean more into the Green Lantern. The fact that like the costume almost feels like a treat to us, like they're they're teasing us.
DrewWell, he's like over it. He's like, I don't want to wear this shit. Like, I'm okay. Like, listen, Calvin Klein 2022.
Badr MilliganAnd so far, all of the constructs have I'm like, okay, the this feels like really easy construct. Now, granted, we're only two episodes in. They, I mean, I could be surprised come episodes.
DrewBut so far, we've seen Guy Gardner.
Badr MilliganWe've seen a bird, we've seen a can opener. That also that fucking lantern that he uses to read. So we've seen counter fraud and animals, you know? We've seen him commit fraud. Bro, counterfeit.
DrewI listen, I don't like I know you want to talk about some of the contracts, but dude, the part that I love is the fact that like Hal Jordan is just like, bro, and here's the thing: you've been in the military. Have any of the people that train you been the jovial, nice people, or have they just always been torn?
Badr MilliganI didn't see my trainer smile until I was two years in, and it's only because his baby was being born.
DrewBro, that's what I'm saying. So you even get sense of like in the sense of like, bro, they hit it real in the in the the nail of the head of where of like yo, you have this one character who's just like this veteran that like now he has like this person he has to train and be a partner, and is like, bro, what the you know, I I I will go ahead and say it that I think Nathan Fillion set the bar so high with him portraying Guy Gardner in the Superman movie that you know what I'm saying from the constructs and he also played, he actually did play Green Lantern.
Badr MilliganHe actually played, he is actually voiced Hal Jordan. Yeah, yeah, come on. Like the constructs, the costume, the attitude, the characterization. Like he said the bar so high. I wanted, I guess I was expecting some of that here, but I'm not I'm just not getting it so far.
DrewI think we're gonna get it in the next episode. I think the next episode you're gonna get a lot of it because we're gonna get that Sinestro Hal Jordan talk.
Badr MilliganNo, I mean, no, I mean they mentioned the Guardians, no, don't show them. They mention Oa. I think don't show them.
DrewYeah, but that's what I'm saying. The yo, I like it. And I can I just say can I?
Badr MilliganI'm sorry to interrupt, but can I just say the big reveal when he sends John to go grab his lantern so he could recharge? That lantern looked weak as fuck. I was like, get this $15 Ross lantern. That looked like a that looked like a lantern I could buy at HomeGoods, and they just spray painted that. You know what I'm saying? And then I watched the um the post uh episode breakdown, and man, the way that they were they were like, man, that thing was a sheer beauty, wasn't it? Like we really put a lot of time and effort. I'm like, get the fuck out of here. Get the fuck out of here. They mentioned the manhunters, and I'm like, I get it. We gotta build, it's two episodes, we're building towards something, but right now it's just it's a lot of exposition and not enough spectacle for me right now.
DrewMy personal opinion. If you want, man, you can like adjust your settings, like the contrast and the brightness. So if you want, it can be a little bit green.
Badr MilliganI will say, I did not some things that caught me by surprise I did not see coming. How being supposedly killed in the first episode. Because now we're dealing with a story that's that's taking place in in multiple in two different time frames. Where it's like the past and the present. The present, how Jordan has just been found killed. Jon Stewart looks like he's been, you know, a Green Lantern for a while. I will say the the actor that plays Jon Stewart, uh, which is what is his name again? Okay, uh, Aaron Pierre. That dude, I mean, uh, you couldn't have casted a better looking Jon Stewart. That dude has got the eyes, especially when he grows out the the beard.
DrewI want the beard. Like, yeah, I mean, yeah, he looks great.
Badr MilliganYeah, the Hal Jordan, uh, amazing too. Kyle Chandler. I like that he's playing this version of Hal Jordan. You can tell like you're like, this guy is gonna be parallax at any point. Oh, he's he's he's seen some shit. He's broken, man. He's like I like that you compared it to someone that like in the military that I mean, because I know so many of those guys where it's like, man, you are burnt out. You don't want to be here. You have you become jaded. That's what it is. You have become so. So no pun intended jade green, get it? Yeah. You become so jaded that you know it's hard for you to like, you know, uh find that joy and that spark in what you do. But yeah, so far you're just so good at your job and nobody else is willing to do what you do. Yeah, yeah. So that's how I feel about it so far. It has not quite won me over just yet. I I want a little more, but there are things I do like about it.
DrewOkay, all right.
Badr MilliganWhy'd you do the money?
DrewI just want a little more, just a little more, just a little more.
Badr MilliganHonestly, give me a little, a little more, a little a lot more, a lot of a lot more. Give me a lot more. I think the next episode is episode three that's coming out this week. It looks like it's going to get into Jon Stewart's um origin, how he got selected by the landers, some sort of application interview process. Okay, hell yeah. I want to see what HR looks like over in Oa. Can I ask you on the topic of these DC uh films? Um, I still have not watched Supergirl yet. Have you watched it? Yes. When did you watch it? Did you like it? How was it?
DrewUh I watched it when all that backlash was going out.
Badr MilliganWait, did you watch it in theaters or did you rent uh rent it? Buy it. I rented it. Okay. I mean, how was it? It was a movie.
DrewThere was a beginning, middle, and end. It was a movie. Like it was like I dude, I felt really bad for it because honestly, dude, it's it it is not that it is not good. Really? You have a you have a great cast. Okay, great cast. The story was just bro, it's one of those things where I get it. The dire I think the dra I don't really know if it's true or not because I just read an article and I didn't fact check the article. But apparently the people that directed and wrote that movie didn't read Tom King's Supergirl. I didn't and I find that hard to believe. Like they're like it's right.
Badr MilliganThe blueprint is right there.
DrewIt's literally right there. You could have just done a couple of things, but the actress that plays Supergirl awesome. She's amazing. It's really, really good. It's not that great. Oh, Millie Alcock. Yeah, Millie Alcock from uh House of Dragons. How is Jason Momoa's logo?
Badr MilliganIt was sad. Wait, what? It was sad. And what way? It was just this sounds painful. It sounds like I'm asking you to like do math.
DrewIt was Jason Momoa. It was just Jason Momoa in makeup. It was just makeup. Literally, it was just Jason Momoa makeup. It was like, okay, like I get it.
Badr MilliganHe had some really cool spots and stuff, but it was I will say the marketing for it sounded very promising in terms of like being inspirational and like this this big like movie. And you know why I didn't watch it is because uh we were um we were in Japan when that movie came out. So I was like, oh, I'm gonna miss this in theaters, but I'll catch it afterwards. And when the movie dropped, I just the reviews I'd seen, all the commentary, it kind of took the um it didn't make it a priority for me. So then I was like, okay, well I'm gonna miss it in theaters, I'll probably catch it on DVD, but I still haven't gotten around to it. Um and now hearing you say that it's uh I mean you have pretty somewhat similar tastes. So you're saying it like it it had no redeeming quality. Like you were like, oof.
DrewLike there some of the themes were really like I wouldn't even say cool, like it was very much like, okay, I understand the scene, but why are you making it like this? And why is it? Crypto's in this movie, right? What about crypto? Crypto's in this movie, and it's like basically the main thing is like it follows the same thing. Crypto gets hurt now. Supergirl has to like go and uh find this guy who has the antidote who is a sex trafficker. So this whole movie is about sex trafficking. Okay, so it's like okay, I like yo. I don't remember that in the book, but okay, but this one felt like Thor Oh don't say it.
Badr MilliganOh Thor 4.
DrewI would put those in the same I would put yeah, yeah, love and thunder and same thing. I would put those movies like actually in the same category.
Badr MilliganYou just explained that's a great comparison. That is what I've kind of heard it. That it gets a little silly and all over the place and very formulaic. Um, damn, yeah. Now this is okay. All right, it sounds like I'm going to save my pennies until I see it on TV later.
DrewBro, do you do I wouldn't even watch it on TBS? I I would not watch this movie ever. Damn. If I had a chance to get back my time, I would.
Badr MilliganYou get you could use a time machine once and you're like, cool, I know exactly where I'm going. Don't yeah, yeah. You go back in time to type yourself for the first time.
DrewBro, you could invest in an Apple. No, I know where my priorities lie.
Badr MilliganThat's funny. And we keep it truthful around here. Sometimes it ain't all uh uh rosy around here. Can I tell you uh uh on the topic of movies? I finally watched Big Hero Six. Finally watched Big Hero Six. That dude, can I tell I finally caught up with a 12-year-old movie that everyone has been telling me I might probably still hold up. Okay, can I go to all right? The amount of times I kept pausing the movie to look at Blife and be like, is this not the most realistic looking movie? Like the the graphics, the the level of detail in this movie looked like it was live action at times. Like, I'm like, this is an animated movie, dude. This is a great yo, great movie. I do think now, granted, this is a uh what is the rating for this movie? I think it's like a PG 13 or something. I don't know.
DrewI think it's a PG movie.
Badr MilliganOkay, then that makes all the sense of the world. I did find some of it a little fucking corny. Uh some of it was kind of corny. Oh, yeah, like when they killed his brother. Like, like I've seen this before in a crazy movie. It's stupid. Uh, I did find some of it a little cheesy and corny, but uh I don't know. It was earnest, it was endearing, uh, and I am a Bay Max. I get it. I'm like the the reason I even wanted to But this is based off of a Marvel comic book. Can we even go back to that? Yeah, Big Hero Six was the name of the comic, which by the way, when you look at this cover, it is so 90s. You know, I don't know if anyone has ever looked up Sunfire and Big Hero Six, but I mean that's what the movie is based off of. Loosely, I think. I don't think they've got all the same characters. No, I don't think Sunfire shows up. No, or Silver Samurai, according to the cover of issue one. But I I think I told you when we were in Tokyo Disney, the amount of Baymax merchandise, and I I beat myself up. I mean, I hate that I passed up on this dope ass white Baymax bucket hat. I saw it's I wish I would have bought it.
DrewBro, Baymax is like the whole door of the big hero six. You know what I'm saying? Like what if Holdor was a robot?
Badr MilliganFucking idiot doesn't want to fight even though he can.
DrewThe bla blah, like for the longest time, me and my nieces and nephews would basically like blah blah la.
Badr MilliganSo definitely I watched it, I loved it, I like that a lot. So glad you like that movie. Yeah, sir. On the topic of one more thing about movies. I have Obsession rented. I rented it on Amazon Prime per your recommendation. And obviously, the world has been talking about how good this movie is, especially with the X-Men casting. I have not watched it yet. I was gonna watch that last night, but then I walked into uh I turned on YouTube TV and I ended up watching fucking few good men for no reason other than I was like, I was like, oh shit, a few good men.
DrewI was like, I'm Tom Cruise?
Badr MilliganYeah, so instead of watching, Demi Moore. Um that's all I need because Demi Moore.
DrewYeah, it's okay.
Badr MilliganI stopped listening after Demi Moore. Ended up watching this movie to the point that I was like, like it got to the point at night where I'm like, what the fuck? I still have to like edit this episode to have it ready to put out today. Like I watched it last night and I was like, and I suppose I'll watch Obsession until the hundred obsession so I can talk to Drew about it. So yes, I I too, I too have been in on an old movie kick as well.
DrewI thought you were gonna basically tell me, like, I watched this movie and now I'm a right winger. I'm like, I felt like he like I was on the side of Jack Nicholson.
Badr MilliganLike you're like, be careful how you say Nicholson, it got a little scary there. Jack Nicholson, move it alone, boys. Move it along, move it along, boys. Move it along the boys. Okay, uh, let's get on to our next topic, which happens to be Marvel Tokon, fighting soul. Have you noticed that they really emphasize the token? It goes Marvel tokon fighting souls. I'm like, why do they gotta do that?
DrewThis is Japanese, and you have to basically emphasize the Japanese.
Badr MilliganThis game came out just recently, and we have been all about it. Boy, oh boy, have we been all about it. This is a game, Drew. If I may be honest with you, this game came out August 6th. It is August 26th. We've been playing this game for 20 days going at it. We've been playing it to the point. I don't know, I can kind of one hand how many games that we've played online together. I think like Marvelous Capcom collection was one, uh uh uh Dragon Bulsey Fighters. Dragon Bulsy Fighters. We have also had a Rocket League that was during the COVID, that was our big thing. And Injustice. And Injustice. But this is a game that we've played, that we're playing against each other online. Like we're like scheduling dates and stuff. Like, yo, so uh listeners, if if if you haven't played this game, what are you waiting for? I I gotta say, I wanted to hate on this game, so it gave me every reason to hate on it. I was like, okay, looks too much like Fortnite. A lot of controls when I played the practice mode. I'm like, no way am I gonna remember all of these controls. And then I played the episode mode, the story mode. They call it episodes. I played the story mode, and I was like, oh wait, there's five different story arcs. There's an X-Men story arc, an Avengers story arc, uh Spider-Man, a Spider-Man story arc. There's one more. There's two more, but anyways, long story short.
DrewThere's the the villains, and then there's Ghost Rider, the Midnight Suns.
Badr MilliganYeah, yeah, yeah. The Midnight Suns. I played the Doctor Doom story arc to begin with, which is crazy because it's all the way to the fucking right.
DrewYou find him in the first, second, and third, you're like, oh, okay, boom.
Badr MilliganYou know, I'm I'm I'm asked to look in the back. Y'all got anything in the back? Yeah, yeah. So playing the story mode, and then when it opens up with the anime, little anime cutscene, and you get introduced to the story, it's like, okay, uh, the the character, the champion, is uh it's basically contest that champions the the comic brought to you know an anime flares like, oh, the champion is going around to all these different planets, challenging the most powerful teams. Uh, he comes to Earth and the promoter, his right hand person, is like, hey, you know, uh champions of Earth, you know, your tournament style, whoever wins gets to the honor of fighting the champion. I was like, oh, this is a cool premise. This is a premise that makes sense. Using the character, the champion, which this is his whole shtick fighting the strongest of the strongest. And this gives you an excuse to have all these different teams and pairings. The story mode won me over. And then what really set it off is after that anime intro, the rest of it is basically a digital animated comic. It's an animated motion comic. I was not expecting that. I was also not expecting fucking Kieran Gillen to be the writer of all of these separate story arcs, all of them, bro. And Mike Diado does the art for the Doctor Doom story arc, which happened, by the way. It's Doctor Doom. You play Doctor Doom, Magneto, Carnage, and Green Goblin. Yes. Dude, that story arc, I was like, oh, I'm in it. I'm in it now. I haven't even played it yet, so it was good. It was so much fun. Okay, okay. Legit the comic aspect of it is it's like, okay, Marvel, kudos on you. You're you're like, okay, we need to meet a younger demographic. I feel like this game appeals to a younger demographic and then an older demographic like us. It's younger in the sense of like flashy, it's you know, it's a lot of shit on the screen. It's got that anime manga flair to it. And then it's like, but we're also going to pay um respect to the shit that built this, which is the comic books. So I love the whole comic aspect.
DrewSo I think actual storyline into it.
Badr MilliganYeah, yeah. It's like, okay, the story mode, they could have easily like had this be a the third thought, but it does feel like they put a lot of attention into this. Am I wrong?
DrewNo, not at all. It's one of the things where when I looked at it and I saw how many stories that you can play it, I was like, oh, snap. Like the only thing I skipped through is the very, very end, but that's it. Other than that, I was like, yo, I let everything ride through. Like it's still fun to see everything.
Badr MilliganSo I've played practice mode, I've played the story mode, I've played obviously online battles a few. The only thing I I haven't done yet is maybe explore some of the the time trials, like the the trial battles. And then I haven't played anyone online that isn't you or Zach. You have been playing online.
DrewWhen I did the beta stuff, I did online just to pay strangers, so it was very limited. That's been fun. And then you I think you told me about doing the character ones, right?
Badr MilliganYeah, so there's specific character training. Uh, where it it tells it basically walks you through here is how you play with this character top to bottom from the basics to their special moves to their combos. I do like all of the different learning capabilities. Um especially for someone that like me that hasn't played like a legit fighting game in in a while. I do want to say uh the game is is uh developed by Arc System Works, who are the makers of Dragon Ball Fighter Z, one of our favorite fucking video games in the world. Um best fighting game. Hell yeah, I yeah. Uh Guilty Gear, and then Blaze Blue is a game that uh came out in 2012 that my brother Joe religiously.
DrewThat's a brother game. Yeah, little brother game.
Badr MilliganIt's a little brother game. It was Zach into it too. Oh, come on. Yes, yeah, 100%. And I would look at him like a loser, like get the fuck out of here. So it feels like they specialize in like anime manga inspired fighting games, like that have that.
DrewI know a lot of people want them to make a one piece game. I know that's like the biggest thing because this Dragon Ball Z game was so good that they're like, you can do this game, you can do this game. And but I'm I'm really glad that uh we actually got like they were like, Well, what if we did like our own version of like Marvel versus Capcom? But it's not Capcom, it's just Marvel versus Capcom.
Badr MilliganThis game is is is Marvel is Marvel saying, Hey, we don't have to pay Capcom or share any of the profits with them if we just make it ourselves. Yeah, that is what happened. And I gotta say, uh, they got a hit, man. Uh, who are some of your favorite characters to play with?
DrewThat are not of like the classic veterans that have been used to, or I guess are we talking new or veterans? Who are some of your favorite? Let me go and Miss Marvel. Miss Marvel top one. 100%.
Badr MilliganYeah, your Kamala Khan is dangerous. That bitch is all due respect, Alhamdulillah. That bitch is dangerous.
DrewAnd when you like, yo, even when you played her, like I was like, God damn, I've never seen her dance like this. It's like that when when Thor saw uh fucking Jane uh take Mjolner for a test drive, and he's like, Wow, I've never seen that before Kamala Khan. So, yeah. Who else you got? Who else is your favorite? Oh bro, I I've not played a lot with him, but ghostwriter. Like, I'm just loving this Robbie Reyes.
Badr MilliganI love the fact they're giving props to the old uh the new generation. It's a good mix of like obviously you got yeah, you know, fucking Steve Rogers and and Tony Stark, but it's like, oh, but we got Kamala Khan. We got Robbie Reyes Ghostwriter.
DrewWe got Black Panther, but we got freaking.
Badr MilliganWe got Shirby instead of uh the shirt.
DrewAnd she's really fun to see. Like I've seen people play with her, and she looks fucking dope. Like she's not fucking around. Like all these characters have been around and Loki.
Badr MilliganLoki, I honestly yeah, Loki's good too. I if I had to say, I think you're the way you play with Miss Marvel Kamala Khan is is fierce. It you are really good with that character.
DrewI had to find my Brawley, yeah.
Badr MilliganYeah, I gotta say, I think for me, my favorite character is I think magic. Magic is so fucking yo, magic's been on upswing, and I wish I would have invested in magic stock. I don't want to be that guy, I don't want to be that guy, but I've been preaching about how dope magic is.
DrewOh, yeah, and she is I'll never forget. My first my first memory of magic is with you, like that's right. Our first megacon. 100%. I bought MegaCon, and you're like looking for it so you can get Chris Claremont to sign it. And I was like, What the fuck? This is such an obscure mini-series.
Badr MilliganInside of me lies a 70-year-old white man that loves Chris Claremont X-Men comics. No, that was a looking back, it's like I'm sure you Chris Claremont was like, What the fuck is this 19-year-old know about my old limited magic series that didn't sell at all? It must have been weird for him, but magic has been on the come-up lately, and I think it's because they've made her just kind of like more scantily clad, so that way the fucking neck beards are are hyping her up.
DrewBro, they're like, yo, this girl has a sword and short shorts.
Badr MilliganCome on, bro. It's like a recipe for you know, a win-win. But magic is really dope in this game. Um, uh, I also really fuck with Magneto is really I Magneto is like I see really quick. I say I see something online. I'll save that joke for afterwards. Actually, that's not appropriate. Okay, magic magneto. Um magic, magneto, and then I will also be phenomenal, bro. And I didn't want to like them neither. I was like, I don't want to play.
DrewI remember because we were talking shit about it because I was even like blah blah blah, but then you were tap dancing, bro. Like Star Lord is like the Miguel of all the telecom fighters.
Badr MilliganWho would you uh I guess having played me and I I will I will say we I feel like me and you are progressing at a very similar level where it's a it's an even trade-off of ass whoopings, like one day or or not even one day, like one a couple rounds, your boy's on top, and the next thing I know, you do a little bit of adjusting it's like who the fuck am I playing?
DrewI think yo, what I love about is the computer knows they're like, This is what the last team that beat you up. Like I was like, Oh, yeah, all right. I know those motherfuckers like how about we fight them a couple rounds. It's crazy that this game remembers my ass whoopings, and then those are the teams I fight.
Badr MilliganWho would you say is is my best character from your point of view of the receiving end of getting these hands? Because I think, like I said, your Miss Marvel is. I hate fighting that bitch, dude.
DrewI think honestly, your um your Star Lord, dude, your Star Lord was nasty, bro. You were at one point I wasn't even getting I wasn't able to get any hits off of your. But your magic is nasty too, bro. Like when when you're mad, when you're locked on with magic, it's nasty.
Badr MilliganBut that star lord was like one of my ones where I was like, God, and I think uh what kind of made me a little hesitant to play uh this game was also the thought of like having to juggle four characters. I thought that was kind of gimmicky at first. I'm like, okay, so you were like, we'll do you one better Marvel's Capcom by adding a fourth character. And I was like, man, that's gonna be really chaotic. But having played the game, you can legit just play one character at all. It's like not necessary to play or learn how to play. Where in this case, it's one shared life bar. So if you only want to be really good with one character and have the other three as assists or backup, then you can. And I think that kind of makes it a little more accessible, you know, where I'm not having to like worry about, you know, I don't know, playing a bunch of learning a bunch of different characters. I I think one of my only minor gripes is I wish this had launched with more characters.
DrewSo many characters is enough as it is, bro.
Badr MilliganLet's be real, it ain't that much. How many is there? Stock characters, Kamalicon, Spider-Man, Penny Parker, interesting choice. It's like Penny Parker, really? Penny Parker, okay. Penny Parker, Star Lord, Black Panther, Shuri, Hulk, uh, Captain America, Iron Man, Carnage, Green Goblin, Doctor Doom, Magneto, Blade, good choice, Ghost Rider, Robbie Reyes, Deadpool, Loki, Danger, Storm, Magic, Wolverine. So that what's that? 4, 8, 12, 16. Then you get to unlock the boss, the champion, brings us to 15. And then they've already announced the first DLC, which will be Phoenix Cyclops, which is supposed to be out in the fall. So it's like, why I the fall is literally right around the corner, but I kind of feel like this is a four-on-four video game, and you're telling me the DLC is only gonna have one character. You know what I'm saying? Like, give us enough to at least do another, like another squad. Where's the Fantastic Four? Uh they've been hinted.
DrewLike, I've been like any of the story modes, and basically I think they're just saving it.
Badr MilliganWhat character? I guess on the topic uh of characters, what is a character that you want them to introduce that you think would be a good fit for this game? Because I feel like there's a very obvious one. Boomerang. I want I want boomerang.
DrewI think I said I send it to the I sent it to the group chat. I would want them, I wanted to the group chat. Just always throw me. I send a picture of Captain Captain Commando, and then I did uh boomerang. Cat the boomerang, same. I would want a boomerang type of Captain Commando type character where he his assist are the different villains.
Badr MilliganHmm. Okay, so you're okay, okay. Boomerang.
DrewBecause you're not on a Captain Commando, like he's able to do a bunch of stuff, but he can call any of his dudes, and then when he does the super move, that's when he calls all of his guys. So I want the superior foes of Spider Man.
Badr MilliganOh, okay. That's a cool. All right. So you're saying like uh one character that every other move uh like Captain Commando. Okay, that's fair. Yeah I feel like for a game called Marvel Tokon fighting so I'm telling you silver samurai, bro. Okay. On the topic silver samurai, where give me Iron Fist. This is a fighting game. Let's think about the fighting.
DrewBut we want new Iron Fist. You want Asian Iron Fist? Oh new kid. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You want the new kid.
Badr MilliganYeah, yeah. Yeah.
DrewI want I want because representation is what's on the bar.
Badr MilliganI wouldn't be mad about even just regular uh uh Danny Iron Fist. I just I think Iron Fist would be a good one. Would you want sunspot or cannonball? Neither. Give me like dang give me, give me Luke. Uh look, give me give me Iron Fist. Give me Power Man. Uh, I think Daredevil would be dope. You know, like give me some give me some brawlers.
DrewSilock Daredevil, or you want Electra Daredevil? Give me just Electra, give me Electra. Knowing them, knowing them, they would probably do Electra Daredevil, and then you would get all of her costumes.
Badr MilliganAnd I'm saying, like, Electra Special could be like her hyper special, could be like she summons the hand to come out and just fight with you two. Come on. There's a lot of Marvel. So okay, what about Kingpin? I don't know. No Kingpin? I don't know. I don't know. But but like I said, I I think I just I'm just not a fan of like this new DLC culture. I know that sounds very old man yelling at clouds, but just not a fan of like the the water, the the the drip, the the DLC drip. You know, it's like here's one character for now. It's like, come on, man. Like this is this is a fighting game that I want more characters, baby. We got a whole bunch of them we can go. They're gonna string my wallet along. That's what they're doing. String that wallet along.
DrewWhat if they how excited would you be if the next DLC was combo man? Yo, bro, dude. Yeah, give me a big one. Would you lose your mind?
Badr MilliganLike, what would you do? I would probably cry tears of joy, and I would go to that fucking shady gas station up the street and buy the biggest bag of pepperoni combos, and you know I don't eat pork. I mean pepperoni combos, mom. I'm sorry. They dropped combo man on that ass. He's a $20 DLC single character, but I I gotta make, I guess we ain't paying the JAA bill today, baby.
DrewLesson, I'm telling you, have you heard of the word? Yeah, combo man.
Badr MilliganOkay, that was good. All right, Drew, let's move into our.
DrewI guess you got anything else to say about Marvel Tokon Souls. No, man, it's really fun. Uh, if you guys, if anybody's interested in it, uh please add us on the PlayStation. For the most part, we use the same room number.
Badr MilliganYeah, we do.
DrewOkay, okay.
Badr MilliganHere's what I'll say. If anyone listening around, any of our Patroni homies are listening and they got the game and they feel like I could probably whoop Badr and Drew's ass. We invite you to partake. Uh uh text me. Uh uh text me. You can send us fan mail, you can text us fan mail, text, text me. You know, I I would like to get something with like I think this is a game I I feel comfortable hopping online and not embarrassing myself. So, yeah, we accept challengers for the patroni. Maybe we'll do like a we should do like a Patreon night, like a patroni fight night. Yeah, really.
DrewI think we can just make a Discord, like a fight club Discord. I would honestly love to have my own version of a fight club or yeah, yeah.
Badr MilliganAll right, let's move into our last topic.
DrewTime to wrap this shit up.
Badr MilliganSorry, yes, ma'am. Okay, uh, it's time to wrap this shit up. Drew, let's talk about the comic books that we've been reading lately. What have you been enjoying? Good sir, dude.
DrewI've been on a list, bro. I've been on a tangent. Let me pull it up real quick.
Badr MilliganOkay, I'm gonna turn on the lights because it's dark in here. Oof, there we go.
DrewOkay, bro. So I've been on on on not on one, but I've been reading. So, as far as I have two different library cards, so I've been using a book.
SFXI'm reading Rainbow.
DrewSo good. I've been reading Peter David's Incredible Hulk with uh Todd McFarland as artists. Oh, I didn't know that Todd also did the art during that time. I guess it makes sense.
Badr MilliganOkay.
DrewIt's uh he so far I've only read three issues of it and he's been doing all the artwork for it. And it's like, oh, okay, this is pretty good. It's a gray Hulk. And it's been Rick, is it Rick Jones? Okay, there's Mike Jones, Rick James, and Rick Jones. Just so we're on the same thing, right? You know what I'm saying?
Badr Milligan904, 321. No, it is definitely not 904, but I was at the 904 for it.
Drew904, 710.
Badr MilliganThat's my number.
DrewThis one is is more of a Milligan cut, uh, Radiant Black.
Badr MilliganTime out real quick. Before we move on from the uh Incredible Hulk, I had to look up what was Peter David's run on Hulk. I know it's a long run. Do you know what issues uh uh Peter David wrote Hulk?
DrewStarts with 331 and then goes to 476.
Badr MilliganThat boy is good. You got the 76 mixed up, it's 467. Um, and I and I and that's not counting uh, I guess some annuals. The side stuff, the imperfects, yeah, yeah, yeah, all that stuff. Okay. Okay. All right. So you're reading that and then you are Have you read any of Peter David stuff? Dude, I actually own a good I own all of the Peter David. What is that dude's name? Mike Kion? Is that not Dale Kion?
DrewI bought I remember buying Del Mondo and then Dale Kion.
Badr MilliganI bought all of those Dale Kion issues of Incredible Hulk because I was gonna bind them, but they're in a short box somewhere. No, I have not read it. I've obviously heard all the amazing things about Peter David uh and his Hulk run.
DrewI hear it's amazing, but do you hear why it's amazing?
Badr MilliganBecause it gets like really psychological. It also takes them through uh, you know. I I think I read there there was a series called The Pantheon. Bruce Banner joins a secretive godlike family super. I think I might have read that, but I think it's because Peter David really transformed the character, like much like how we did like X Factor. He got like really psychological with it, really like uh characterization, like really focused on like you know, uh uh telling good character stories.
DrewIt's like soap opera uh aspect where he's like, all right, it's very character driven. Okay, I can see that because there's a lot of stuff that's happening here where I'm like, oh, okay, this is pretty fun and interesting. Um the the one image that I have from Peter David that I want to like get to is it's like Hulk with like two machine gun bullets crossed. I think that's a dead cover. Like I want to get to that. Like I want to get to like that and understand like how did we get there in the aspect of uh Incredible Hulk. I think so.
Badr MilliganUh McFarlane didn't do a bunch of Hulk issues, but but someone like my dad, uh he actually prefers McFarland's uh Hulk run over any other McFarlane stuff. He's like a pretty big fan of that. So okay, and then uh you you mentioned that you're also reading Radiant Radiant Black.
DrewI've been reading a lot, I've been reading a lot. Like I have not been watching TV and just reading reading. So why why Radiant Black? To tell you that I'll be honest with you is because Kyle Higgins' Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is not available on Hoopla. They took all the Boom Studio stuff on the street. Yeah, that's right.
Badr MilliganBoom lived the hoopla.
DrewYeah, yeah. So I went there looking to like kind of read some of the later Power Ranger stuff because I was interested to see like where the story was going because it's still running, like there's still issues coming out. So I'm like, oh, maybe there's like some fun stuff I can read. So there wasn't on none available, but then they released this one through 12. So I was like, let me just read this because it's gonna it's basically Kyle Higgins' Power Rangers. Um to quote Mr. Milligan that you have said that this is this generation's invincible. So now I'm kind of like, oh, all right, I'm going with that aspect.
Badr MilliganYeah, I I think Radiant Black. What I've respect about it is what Kyle Higgins has built on Radiant Black, how he's got a very dedicated fandom. Uh the spin-offs that he's you know, like he's really built like a world of characters and you know, like this universe that um I don't know. I feel like people really fuck with it. I I've obviously had fallen out of Radiant Black a while back because it just was a lot to keep up with, especially when we got into the spin-offs. But that first those like first two arcs, I was heavily into. I was like, yo, this the plot is cool, the design is dope. Um, I wish I would have gotten to like the Radiant Black War, whatever the big there was like a big event that everything was leading up to.
DrewSo that's where I'm excited to get to. Like, I'm excited to get to that aspect of it and see like, okay, like I know Kyle Higgins is a great writer, and I I can't I would love to read Savage Dragon, but it's so far that I think Radiant Black is the easier, like I can make I can get there easier.
Badr MilliganYeah, I think Radiant Black reads better now. I think it read you know, I was collecting it while it was coming out month to month, and I just was I was not able to keep up with it, but I think it probably reads better now considering all the collected editions they have. You know what I'm saying? Like you actually get to see the story really like progress and and all that stuff. So that's a good pick.
DrewYeah, and I I don't know where it's headed or where it's gonna go. I just know from the first two arcs, same thing as you like first two arcs. I know exactly what happens after that. I don't know where you're gonna go with it. So obviously it could be fun. And um, I what was really awesome when I was looking at Kyle Higgins, bro, he has written a lot of Ultraman.
Badr MilliganOh, yeah, he's a huge Ultraman.
DrewI thought he wrote I thought he only wrote two, but like no, he has like a bunch of Ultraman, then he has like an Ultraman Avengers tie-in, and then he has a couple of DC books that he's coming out with, too. He's got this Batman series, I think, of Dan Mora.
Badr MilliganWhat is it called? It was like Future Gotham. No, it is oh uh uh Legend Immortal Batman.
DrewOkay, yeah, it's like the really cool, sleek Batman Beyond looking suit.
Badr MilliganYes, and everything I'm pulling up is like the uh Spanish version of the comic, so I can't understand what the fuck it's saying. Uh but it's uh like his version. Oh, here it is Immortal Legend Batman, and it is uh you've seen this before, right? Yes, I've definitely seen that one.
DrewAnd it's like, oh, that's a cool design because it feels more like I want to say, I think nightwings underneath that. Looks like a nightwing cot like a nightwing Batman versus a Bruce Wayne Batman.
Badr MilliganYeah, hold on. There's a phrase for this one. I always forget like what you call like um the Power Rangers genre. What is it called? Uh Tokatsu, uh Tokusatsu. That's what it is. And Sentai. Dude, no, I want to, which is a fucking problem. Okay, uh, have you been reading anything else or you want to pass to me?
DrewThe one thing that I was excited about reading, David Pepus. Is that how he says his name? Pepos. The guy that wrote David Pepos. I read his cable. Oh, nice. I forgot he did this. He did like a five-issue cable run. So, because I know they've been giving him a lot of like five-issue runs, and he's able to get the job done. So that one was fucking really he's a good writer, man.
Badr MilliganDavid Peppos is a uh and it's called Cable Love and Chrome written by David Peppos. Who did the art? Who did the art? The same dude that did Old Man Logan. Oh, Penciler Mike Henderson, nice. Yep, cover art by fucking my man Ian Churchill. This came out last year. So those five issues, that was definitely really fun. Umxtape of yours. I like this.
DrewYou got a uh Peter David I've been double because I have two library cards now. I've been honestly reading on and I have two iPads. Like I'm like, okay, I'm gonna go here and then your room look like a streamer farm.
Badr MilliganLike when you see like the videos of like the stream farms, they got all the iPads and shit all over the place.
DrewThat's instead of karma farming and there's comic farming.
Badr MilliganOkay, uh, what have I been reading? Oh, okay. My first and foremost, the thing I've been reading in physical, my friend. You know, I love me a good compact, bro. Okay, I picked up the authority compact comic that came out. It's called the Relentless. I love how thick this fucking book is. This do you know what this collects? It collects one through twelve? Yes, it collects one through twelve, and also collects uh planetary and the authority, this planetary uh authority crossover called Ruling the World. And then it also collects Wild Storm, a celebration of 25 years, Absolute Authority Volume 1, whatever the hell that is.
DrewSo, like it sounds like that is a fucking thing, but wait, Planet's worthy by front with uh Cassidy.
Badr MilliganBut uh the art I think Warren Ellis is writing, but uh the art switches okay. So for the first 12 issues of Planets, or I'm sorry, the authority is Brian Hitch. Yeah, and I don't know what I might have said about Brian Hitch in the past. It sounds like you remember maybe some scandalous things.
DrewBecause Brian Hitch is one of my top, one of my top five favorite artists.
Badr MilliganAnd did I shit on him or something? Did I say he wasn't?
DrewYeah, you're like, you're like, because we were talking about ultimates and you were telling, oh, like way back, way back when. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You're like one popular opinion, you're like, I don't like Brian Hitch. Oh, yeah, yeah.
Badr MilliganSo fuck for sure. I I did have a point where I did not like Brian Hitch. I thought his stuff was like way too detailed and just messy. I think I I since walked that back. I think I've since walked back that opinion. It grew on me. And I've read the dude, I have read The Authority a few times. So I'm like, okay, I know I've read this the first arc now twice, if not three times. I've I don't think I've ever read up until issue 12, which I think is where Warren Ellis and Brian Hitch are the one creative team, and then they pass it to Mark Millar and Frank Quietly take over after them. Bro, I'm gonna say this. Brian Hitch, his best artwork is in this, is in these first 12 issues. Yeah. Like between him and then the color, the colorist in this. Uh uh, what's her name? Laura. Oh, yes, Laura Martin. It's Brian Hitch, Paul Neary doing the inks, and then Laura Martin, dude. When I say it is like the Holy Trinity, it is like the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This is a cinematic lead. It's the art feels cinematic. It's a movie? It is, yeah, very movie. I'm like, okay, this is around the time early.
DrewI think uh the authority would this would you consider this DC's G.I. Joe or DC's Watchmen?
Badr MilliganOh, hmm. I think a blend of both because the authority, for those that don't know, is a superhero team that Warren Ellis created. Which, by the way, I gotta say, I I do gotta acknowledge that I completely forgot that Warren Ellis is a piece of shit. Uh, he had a lot of different um uh he was accused of grooming, sexual harassment. He had a lot of things come out, I think a few years ago from uh victims that did not paint him in a good light. So I kind of forgot about that when I picked this up. So I am conflicted giving him a lot of props, but I I gotta say that if I'm just judging the quality of the art of the product, this is a fucking fantastic story. Um the characters, you know, you got Jenny Sparks, you got the engineer, Midnighter, Apollo, you got uh uh this chick named Swift, the one with the wings. And then I love uh his name is Jack. I forgot his last name. Jack, but he can connect with the city, like he knows what the city's feeling. He can like use the city against villains. Oh shit. It is such a rag tag.
DrewBoy got Twitter power. My boy got Twitter power. He can see, yeah, the Zeitgeist is his power. He's like, bro, Liz, you know how many unlikes you're about to have? Everybody about unfollow you, bro.
Badr MilliganBut what's dope is that their whole shtick is like, hey, we we tackle, you know, uh planetary, you know, uh alien invasions on top of like global terrorists, you know, like they they deal with anything that is threatening the planet, and their spaceship is called the carrier, and it can travel dimensions and time. It's like in hindsight, uh in today's vision, you're like, okay, I've seen that story done a few different times. But when you consider that, I think this came out in 1999 or 2000, like early 2000s for sure. It definitely feels very early 2000s. A lot of the stuff they say is very like edgelordy, it's a little like extreme, I think, at times. It's like 90s extreme, but a little more polished, you know. Like it's a little more nihilistic for sure. I definitely think that they cuss, you know, but in cool ways. But man, I fucking love it. This shit's like dope. They keep mentioning her character besides Jack. Uh fuck with Jack. The engineer is dope. I forget that the engineer is, you know, she shows up in Superman, right? She shows up in Superman, and and I I kind of forgot that because it's not the same. I mean, obviously, her power set, the nanotechnology of being able to create weapons out of her body is like but it's a different character all around. But all characterization. She's way more softer, gentler, like, and she can transform back into a human. Jenny Sparks, though, the leader, love her. This fucking cussing uh British like Captain Britton stuff.
DrewYeah, yeah.
Badr MilliganYeah, she's like just a tough, hard ass. Like she's toss lovingly. She's a little bud.
DrewShe's a tough old bud.
Badr MilliganShe's a tough bitch, boy. She's a tough bitch, but I love her, bro. She's got electricity powers, and she don't take no shit from nobody. It's a good story. I gotta say, this combat for ten dollars, it's ten bucks, and you're basically getting worth its weight in gold. Worth its weight, ten bucks. These combat comics keep on killing it. So I've been reading The Authority, and it's got me thinking because they keep referencing Stormwatch, which was, I guess, where all these, you know, a lot of these characters debuted. Because it goes Stormwatch and then The Authority came out, and then I think like Planetary or something else. But I I kind of want to go back and re-read, I want to read Stormwatch to see the origin. So I've read into that. Um, what else have I read? Oh, Drew, you will fuck with this. Have you ever heard of this? Uh I'm reading this uh Marvel comic called Clobberin Time, which might as well be a Ben Grimm comic book. Uh, it is written and drawn by Steve Scross, who is the creator of such titles, such as Um Maestros that came out from Image a while back about the wizard. Uh he also did the Shaolin Cowboy? No, I forget. He's on some other stuff. I'm telling you, once you see Steve Scroos' artwork or his titles, you'll be like, oh, I know exactly what you're talking about. Oh, he also drew X-Men back in the day. That's where I know him from. Like the old Nathan Gray X-Men series. But Collaborant time. Drew, I think you would fuck with this because it is basically Ben Grimm meets uh um, and I gotta uh shout out uh who actually gave me this comparison, I forget right now. Um, but it's Ben Grimm meets Rick and Morty. It's Ben Grimm going every issue, he's going through a different adventure in space and time. The first issue he's like with Hulk, and they get teleported to this planet, and they've got to protect the civilization from like this horde of like evil aliens. So then they end up becoming worshipped at the end. And then the second issue, he's on Krokoa at a convention giving a speech in front of like the the X-Men nation, and um something happens where like Krokoa gets invaded and it's Ben Grimm and Wolverine having to like team up. And the third issue, which I'm on, it's like an adventure with Doctor Strange. Dude, you would like it because the humor is great.
DrewI like the way you said Rick and Morty, like Rick and Morty.
Badr MilliganVery much where it's like, you know, a different adventure every episode, but self-contained. There's a larger story arc where there's this mystery character from the future that is trying to build a bomb, and he keeps uh he's got a gripe against Ben Grimm in the Fantastic Four, and you're not quite sure why just yet, but obviously it's gonna get revealed. Look up the cover for issue two and tell me that is not the freakiest thing you've ever seen. At some point, the this mystery character uses his power. He's like, I wonder what's underneath all those rocks. And he's able to make like Ben Grimm's yeah, yeah, individual rock pieces like lift off his body, and you get to see like the interior of Ben Grimm. Yeah, it's weird, it is such a weird the cover was like, Oh, this is weird. But in the issue, he actually does what happens on the cover, and it's the way it's described. You're like, oh, that sounds nasty.
DrewLike, all right, cool, let's make this motherfucker suffer.
Badr MilliganHe's like, Oh, you're a lot more squishy underneath. You're like a sponge. He compares them to a sponge. He's like, Oh, it's a very sponge texture underneath all that rock, dude. You would love that, you would like that issue. You would like that series a lot. Oh, that would make sense because like when he gets hit, like it probably takes any impact. I'm telling you, you would enjoy it. It's it's funny, it's well written, and you just get all these different cameos, and it's like focus on Ben Grimm. You know, you're like a likable guy. He's a likable guy. He's a likable guy. All right, and then last but not least, uh, I recently had a chance to interview Jason Fabok. Very great, good guy, really cool guy. I really like talking to him. So I ended up reading Ruby. Dude, that motherfucker can draw. I re I read, uh, have you read any of it?
DrewNo, his Batman is like, bro, it's like, yo, you can draw a Batman just buying ice cream, and it's a good one.
Badr MilliganI forgot that he was the main artist, or at least the cover artist for the Batman Eternal series, which to me holds a special place in my heart because I remember that being like, one, it was weekly, which like I had never seen anything at the at the time. And then I was just getting into Batman because I think Batman Eternal was on the heels of what was that Batman arc where uh um Dick Grayson ends up taking over? But there's a three-issue series where it's like him having to fight for the battle for the cow, fight for the cow.
DrewYeah, battle for the cow.
Badr MilliganYeah, by Johnny Daniel. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So I was really into Batman at the time. So, you know, I'm like, damn, Jason Fabak has I've been a fan of his for a while. So I finally got around to reading Brooke Exodus, which is his uh creator-owned uh uh series with Jeff Johns under the ghost machine imprint.
DrewWarthog versus wolf versus bears. Yes, it is like okay, it's mine would be a raccoon. Like that would be mine. I don't know, raccoon everyone.
Badr MilliganYou're a raccoon warden?
DrewLike, let's go, raccoon.
Badr MilliganIt's dope to see all the world building because there's all these different wardens on this planet that's like dying. Like the whole premise is that um it takes place on this planet that is about to basically explode. Like uh this company basically went on this planet. They're promising, like, hey, this is Earth 2.0. So they're, you know, people are leaving regular Earth, Earth Prime, whatever, because it's going to shit. Like global warning has finally fucked it up. So people are leaving Earth to this other planet with the promise of like, hey, this is a paradise. We can control everything from the weather, the animals, all of this, it'll be great. Goes to shit. The planet's about to erupt. But they have these individuals called wardens who who can control different animal life. And they get real granular. It's like there's a warden for the crows, which is Brooke Exodus. There's a warden. For the warthogs, the warden for the turtles, there's a warden for the wolves, the spiders, like an insane amount of wardens. So Brooke is trying to get off the planet. He was a farmer in his old life. His dad died and burned down the farm that his family, you know, grew up on. So he's trying to start fresh, but now this planet is going to shit. He's like, I gotta get off this planet. But uh some of the other wardens, like, nah, man, we could save this planet if we really try. And he has a change of heart later on. There's a things that happen. But it is now on issue 17. And having having talked to Jason, you know, it's like this is a guy that could have stayed at DC drawing any character he wanted. He told me that he's never drawn a Marvel character, he's never drawn for Marvel at all. Only sketches.
DrewThey've never approached him, they've never approached him.
Badr MilliganSo, you know what I'm saying? It's like this is a guy that could have easily stayed on Batman, got a nice easy paycheck, but he decided, hey, I want to do my own thing. I want to own my own characters. I want to be able to like, I want to be able to, you know, if if this gets optioned for a movie, I want to have the say and own. So you're like, all right, yo, I respect that. So I think you would fuck with Rook Exodus just because the masks are so cool. There's a scene. Yeah, yeah.
DrewI just like yo, I like that all the that whole aspect of Did you read it? Oh fuck. I've read the first the first volume.
Badr MilliganOh, same, same. That's all I've read is the first volume.
DrewYeah, I I love the fact. I love the fact that he's trying to like build a rocket shit and he keeps fucking up. Like I just love that.
Badr MilliganI think issue four, there's a uh he goes and finds like the main central computer that's controlling the world, and when he taps in and he's able to see where all the other wardens are on the planet. That is one of my favorite scenes because it showed me how big the world was. I was like, oh damn, I kind of want to see. I think there's a warden called the stag who controls like the deer, but he's got like a samurai blade and he's got like a dope red mask. It was enough to I'm like, I might have to like keep up with this series and trade as it comes out.
DrewIt's like um the last of us. It's like a it's like it is um an easy hit in the bar because you're like it's post-apocalyptic, there's like zombie-looking things. This dude like has a math that can control and no character design, cool premise, art is stupid good.
Badr MilliganAnd I think there is something to be like, oh, I'm supporting you know this creator owned thing, and I hope they succeed. And it's kind of Jeff Johns writing it. It's like, come on, man. That is what I've been reading, my boy. The authority claubbern time, which I think you would like. And then Rook Exodus. Bet I think we did it. I think we got a pod. I think we got an SFE. I got nothing. I have nothing else saved for said pod. I think we are good. You got anything?
DrewYeah, no, I just you hate Green Lanterns. Um, I just want to go over everything we want to fan Green Lanterns. You love the authority, yeah.
Badr MilliganThe authority. I'm like, I love problematic writers like Warren Ellis um in his old shit. I enjoyed a 14-year-old uh animated movie. That was great. And I will whoop your ass in Marvel Talk on Fighting Souls. Don't even try me.
SFXThat's probably the best one.
Badr MilliganAll right. So I think with that being said, we can wrap this episode up. Drew, as always, a fucking pleasure, my boy. Thank you for a good time. Until next time. To the listeners, thank you so much for uh hanging out with us, man. Letting us chit-chat and catch up and be goofballs and just say things that we probably shouldn't say on them on a recorded mic, but we love you guys, and uh we hope you join us for the next time. Until then. Thanks for not canceling us. Thank you for helping. Thank you for helping SFP get to episode 43. We have no plans for 44 through 50.
